I don't know if this would be the right forum for this question, but as it involves painting and terrain building, it was as good as any I figure. I've got a Styrofoam piece from a new PC. It would make an AWESOME fortress, I think and easily be modified with weapons to use the rules for Imperial Bastion/Strongpoint. The thing is, it's 20'x20" from longest part to widest. It's got a big opening that could be a bay door for armor, multiple levels. It could be a really cool project but I wonder if it's just too big to actually use in game. What do you guys think?

pics or your thread does not exist.... sorry, an image would help people consider your plight. Have you considered carving it up into smaller managable chunks???
20 by 20 inches is pretty big and will not fit into most deployment zones..... I vote to big but it's your scenery

I say that exact same thing ever time I open a box that has a styrofoam board in it..
Haven't made anything yet, lol.

I wouldn't think it would make a good proxy of a fortification, but Ithat doesn't mean you shouldn't attempt to make an awesome ruin out of it. Since it will dominate so much of the table it might be something that you and your opponent should create scenarios to help use it to facilitate play rather than hinder it.

It would probably be cool in apocalypse . I wouldn't proxy it for a fortification though. Just use it as a big building.

I'm with the general consensus here. Sounds like this is too big to use as a GW rulebook fortification. People tend to get finicky with those since they cost points and have rules. Sounds like what you have here is more suited to a custom game type, or maybe one of those terrain situations where you set up a cool board and your opponent picks sides/goes first. Whatever it says about that in the book, been awhile since I checked.
Sounds like a fun project though, nothing says epic space battles like massive imperial structures to fight over.

I personally wouldn't mind it used as proxy, since the in game function would be the same. I can see why some wouldn't though.
I suppose it would be possible to cut it up and break it apart like a demolished Imperial military base. If other terrain was used, maybe put it centrally to use as an objective like King of the Hill or something. I guess really I should have put this in General Discussion. I took a quick glance and didn't notice any size limitation on terrain in the BRB, but the largest it mentions is 12"x12".
If I had the space, it'd make a great diorama piece, and a way to openly display my entire army. It's pretty huge.
In the morning I'll take some pictures and post here, maybe that will help us figure out what, if anything, to do with it.

What if you built it up as an Imperial Firebase & did a scenario like GW did many moons ago in WD where they had a SM garrison force bastioning the firebase & an Eldar rapid strike force attacking it with the SM patrols returning randomly each turn in the form of assault squads, bikes, land speeders etc?

If it is a nice piece of stuff it would be a shame to throw it away.
You could use it for special scenarios -- I mean not standard rulebook scenarios. You could for instance just put it in the middle of the table like a huge regular shaped hill that people have to move around. That would create an interesting game in which a lot of the opposing troops could not see each other a lot of the time.
Remember that expanded polystyrene needs to be primed with a coat of PVA before you use spray can paints on it. The plastic will be dissolved otherwise.

Definitely huge. I can already see little catwalks along the edges of it. It would be a really neat piece of terrain for 28mm inquisitor/necromunda/inquisimunda/etc.
Looks like some kind of command center/bunker. Something this size definitely needs to be a centerpiece on a regular table, opponent's consent etc etc.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with

It would be good for Necromunda. The more I look at it, the more torn I am. I would love to do it up as one piece, but I think it'd get more actual use and appreciation if broken into parts. There was a second one, but it was broken unfortunately. It's possible I could get another one in the future. My wife's company orders new computers frequently.
