"Its not easy being green" - Kermit the frog
Edit: Yellows, browns and blues are pretty common colours for orks, any earthy tone seems to blend well with them also.
I find its harder to get a unique distinct ork look since the green skin always steals the show.

Can't think of the name of the clan, but there is one where its members are famed for looting anything and everything, Deff Skulls maybe? They're main colour is I believe blue...? The Ork codex will have it in.
If you're wanting to go down the route of, 'Every scrap of armour is looted', then you can paint them whatever colour you want, eg, one Boy might have a BA right pauldron. an IF left pauldron, an IG Flak Jacket, etc. All painted appropriate colours obv.
Hope this helps

You could do like patchy clothing. Like mix and match coloured paints and shirts but still keep them uniform.

I tend to have my green skinned boys in pale to rich blues (deff skulls) and brown clothing. The nobs / selected boss units I paint up in reds. Not for evil sunz but because its the best colour to go with green (see da kullha wheel). The nobz in the boys units also get the red treatment to represent the warlords nobz taking control of the unrulely feral orks that have just joined the warband. Looks okay so far.

If you don't want to go with the obvious Death Skulls (Deff Skullz, however "orkily" you choose to spell it) blue, pick whatever color you'd like to be the army's "theme" color (bearing in mind that any of the usual colors already have a clan association attached to them, which you may not want to have to fight against). Paint your looted bits - guns, armor plates, etc. - in various colors to play up the looting angle, but paint a single, pronounced feature in your clan color to tie the army together. You could, for example, give everyone a uniform (black pants and brown shirts, all purple clothing, etc.), while the rest of their gear is all mismatched. You could just as easily have all of their kit mismatched, but give them face-paint, tattoos, hair (when present), and glyph plates all done up in your clan color. Either method lends a degree of cohesion while still leaving individual models decently varied.
Regarding your followup question, you can certainly leave your primer uncovered, if it's the appropriate color for part of the model. It will, however, end up looking rather flat, so I'd recommend giving it a bit more attention (highlights, etc.), lest it simply look unfinished. The expediency of doing so is a big draw, with so many boys to paint, and the reason why my ork are all clad, at least partially, in black (and not just the Goffs).
