Hey guys, I couldn't really find any other threads on this topic so I thought i'd just start one right here.

I'm plannting to go to Salute this year and I think I would spend about 4 days in London to make it worthwile and so I don't collapse due to a tight schedule. So basically I have to fill about two more days of activity and would like to know if there was any other wargaming related stuff going on that weekend in the London area.

Also - anybody know good accomodation nearby? I'm thinking of something like a Hostel.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

There is sooo much to do in London, not neccesarily wargame related but this site is great for planning - http://www.visitlondon.com/things-to-do/sightseeing/tourist-attraction/museum

I'd reccomend HMS Belfast, the Churchill War Rooms, Tower of London, Imperial War Museum, Natural History Museum, British Museum, Royal Artillery Museum - check them out on the visitlondon site. Some are pricey, some are free...

For accomodation, check out this link from the South London Warlords website - there's also more useful info on Salute '13 there as well.

There's also a contact info for the club - they may have info on other events?

Enjoy your time whatever you do- Salute is always a great show, I'm planning on going and know a lot of the UK based Dakka members attend

BTW, if you haven't seen it yet, this link shoows this years (plastic) freebie figure... http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/508979.page

Hey Ruglud, thanks for the helpful reply!

I forgot to add that I lived in London for about a year so the regular sightseeing stuff is pretty well covered. So far I planned to go to the Imperial War Museum again (it's also close to my old uni which I probably should at least take a look at ). Otherwise, the British Museum sounds good. Much to my embarassment I never made it there when I stayed in London before.

Have you gone to Salute before? I was advised to order the train tickets early on because it was much cheaper, can you confirm that?

Apart from that, yeah, I saw the freebie mini. Do all people who get there get a copy or just the first 500 or something?

cheers,
sigur

says thousands of sprues produced , IIRC usually the free model comes in the gift bag that the first thousand or so ( I think) people with pre bought tickets get.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Any Dakkanauts going, shall we be a bit spoddy and wear a discreet DakkaDakka badge?

If you are staying in London, buy an Oyster card. It is cheaper and more convenient than individual paper tickets and can be used on all the London Transport tubes and buses.

@reds8tn: Thanks and indeed. I'm already thinking of maybe wearing a shirt with a bunch of printed forums logos on it so people would recognize me as a member.

@Kilkrazy: Thanks for the hint. I actually should still have my old Oyster card somewhere, maybe with some credit on it as well. Do those things go void after some time or can I still use my card from around 2008/09?

I think you can still use it but check on the Transport For London website to be sure.

I'm going to cement a DakkaDakka die on a badge clip and wear that as my ID.

I bought ten clips so I can easily make up a batch.

Sounds like a plan. I'll think of something that'll show people my "true identity" as internet squirrel. That might cause some strangers to punch me but I might have to take that risk.

i will be at salute for most of the day too, look forward to seeing people again!

Sigur, dont go to the imperial war museum this trip - most of the good stuff has been removed as they are rebuilding it ready for the 100th anniversary of WW1 in 2014.

Check out our new, fully plastic tabletop wargame - Maelstrom's Edge, made by Dakka!

Well, my tickets are in the post according to PayPal...

Shame about the IWM, was thinking a bout a visit there with my lad later in the year...

So will there be a Dakka meet and greet spot - preferably somewhere near the Amber Nectar?

I also wander if this will the same weekend as the London Marathon check in takes place in Excel - always makes me laugh to see the mix of energetic and healthy looking runners mingling in the concourse with the wargamer's (beer belly's, bushy beards and Star Wars t-shirts)... Always makes me laugh and btw, I do fit in with the wargamer crowd, so laughing at myself...
