Firestorm new player here with a question.
When a flight moves within 4" of a model OR if a model moves within 4" of a flight, that model get a PD attack against the flight.
Does a model get a PD attack against a flight if the model STARTS its activation with the flight already within 4" of it?
Also the reverse of that: Does a model get a PD attack against a flight if that flight starts its activation within 4" of a the model and the flight moves within the model's 4" PD (bubble)?

I'm using the latest v2 rules.

No. PD is only activated IF you are attacked. By moving your ship into range of the flight does not trigger your PD. This being said, as soon as the flight is activated, you will get to PD it.

A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

Sorry but you're wrong. See p30 of the rulebook.

"The Point Defence systems on a model can be used to Attack
an enemy Flight during a Squadron Activation as follows.

• Anytime during its Movement Segment that a Flight
is within 4” of any enemy model.
• Anytime during its Movement Segment that a model
is within 4” of any enemy Flight.

After resolving any Point Defence Attack during the
Movement Segment of a Squadron Activation a model
or Flight MAY complete their remaining movement and
perform any remaining combat related actions, as required."

A PD attack can be declared once per activation. So in your own model's activation you can declare a PD attack mid-move as you get within 4" of the flight and continue your turn after the attack is resolved, then in theory if you end your move within 4" of the flight and the flight activates after you, you can declare another PD attack against it as you're now in a different activation.

I didn't play v1, but I'm guessing this is one of the reasons veteran players bemoan flight wing rules now, as you can get plastered with PD attacks multiple times in one game turn by the same unit

Yes, so true! While you could get whacked with PD multiple times under V1 rules as well, wings also had the ability to intercept ships! So so every time a flight of wings got hit with a ships PD they could simultaneously attack back with their then unlimited AD (no stupid Distopian Wars reload). So ships were taking a risk in doing this.

That sounds pretty cool!

So far I've been unimpressed with wings and carriers in general under v2 rules (except the manta), they just seem like a waste of points especially when a fully loaded carrier is always more or less the same points cost as a battleship. All I've seen bombers do so far in any game I've played or watched is pick off an already crippled heavy cruiser or gunship once a game. Hopefully they FAQ them to be more useful soon, even if all they change is removing the need to dock and reload.

I doubt that will happen anytime. Since the Dystopian Wars writers took over Firestorm, they think their $#!t doesn't stink and their DW rules are perfect-awesome and need to be shoved into Firestorm. The new V2 official wing rules are probably permanent.
