A friend convinced me to pick up some infinity and I'm all for it, but I need some advice on what could be "bad". I'm still really new on the rules, but like always I want to create army that will be fun to paint as well as be decent on the table. The first unit that stuck me is the Chimera box set, but then I saw that 4 guys is only 20 pts? The other route is to go low count, large guys, but what I understand that will put me at a disadvantage?
So. Chimera or big mechs.. what would be a good starting point.
Infinity does't really have "bad" choices, just some are situationally slightly better then others, but not by much. The Chimera and her pups are an Impetuous unit which in 40k terms think old move toward nearest enemy rage + nasty as hell in CC. Those 4 models however only count as 1 of your 10 models in a typical combat group.
In infinity it all comes down really to what faction you like the looks of. If you want to go with the chimera box I'd suggest picking up the bakunin starter as well and you'll have a solid core.
The low count disadvantage is that you want to always get as close as you can to 10 models in a combat group as possible. If you take for example 3 TAGs and that is your whole list you will only get 4 orders in your turn. Meaning that you can only activate 4 times rather then 10. It becomes a bit tactically crippling, though you can take a couple big guys and a bunch of basic line infantry, but you'll find that too can be a bit fragile.

Pay attention to whether the unit is Regular/Irregular. Irregular units can only spend their order on themselves, and do not add an order to the general order pool. For basic units, you should be looking at a couple Moderators. They add orders that you can spend on them or on someone else, as they are regular. They are cheap, too, a good choice.
Some moderators, a couple Morlocks and a salamander would be decent.
At that point you will have 5 Irregular impetuous models (4 morlocks + her pups) that can only use their order on themselves and 2 Regular models (Szalamandra + an Lt). This will leave you a bit order starved since your Szally will only have 2 orders to work with.
Bakunin starter + Morlocks + Chimera on the other hand will give you a solid core. The box has 6 regular model of various varieties that you can then mix aroudn with the morlocks and chimera. You'll still be a little Impetuous/Irregular heavy, but managably so.

Thank you guys. I think I will go with your suggestion Blue and do the starter/morlocks/chimera. Hopefully I can pull out a decent amount of points for that.
I have not, i've watched a game and a few of us are just now starting, so I'll have a game here soon if all goes to plan. Just ordered all my stuff and the books.

Good to hear that, I hope you'll find the game fun.
Actually I've had a similar idea for a 'When animals attack' list - of uberfallkommando (Chimera + 3 pupniks), the morlocks boxset, Bran De Castro (the dude who looks like 'Monkey') and the old daktari cat doctor miniature - no idea at all whether it would be effective, but no doubt it will be a lot of fun!
I guess I would have to pad it out with a few moderators to add some orders though.
Here is a list that could easily be converted up slightly to be all animistic and wouldn't require buying multiples of models. (hate the thought of buying 3x Chimera box when eventually there will be other sculpts)
Just put your models on the board and the list basically plays it's self lol.
