Alrighty, so my current project involves building an Ork force with Necron allies. However, rather than just teaming up Orks and Necrons, I've decided that every unit in the Necron allies detachment will simply by "looted" Necron tech operated by my boyz!

Spoiler:

Pic very much related

The allies detachment currently consists of a Destroyer Lord, some Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers, and a troops choice. It's that troops choice that brings me here today.

I plan to kit up some boyz with a bunch of Orky equivalents of Necron guns and gear, so that they can be stand-ins for Necron Warriors, Necron Immortals, Necron (insert whatever here), Ork Shoota boyz or 'ard Shootas, Ork Lootas, Flash Gitz (with that awful Blasta upgrade naturally) or even Kommandos (they're 'in disguise' get it?) - essentially the mob with a million and one uses!

But in addition to all that above, they could be run, with the opponents permission, as a unique unit called "Tin 'eads" - essentially an Ork slang term for Necrons. They would take up the troops option in the Necrons allied detachment (which technically makes them Necron units, but shut up). Stats, costs, rules etc for this unit are presented below, and I'd like any critique or commentary you have to offer on them;

Ork Tin 'eads

After the success of WAAAGH Krumpit, the tomb world of Chronar II was laid waste and plundered by the unstoppable Orkish tide. Naturally, much of the salvaged Necron equipment fell into the hands of Ork Meks, who soon had it kitted up right Orky for the use of da boyz

Force Org Slot: Troops
Type: Infantry

Cost: 13pts

WS: 4, BS: 2, S: 3, T: 4, W: 1, I: 2, A: 2, Ld: 7, Sv: 4+
aka 'ard boy statline

Equipment: Zappy Shootaz
Mob Size: 10-30 boyz
Upgrades/Characters/etc: None
Special Rules: Mob Rule

Zappy Shoota

Range: 18", STR: 4, AP: 6, Type: Assault 2, Special: Gauss

Rationale;

>Choppy: Dropped 1 S and added 1 A to bring them in line with baseline Ork stats. They're now a tiny bit more killy in hand to hand against troops, but less so against light vehicles due to losing the ability to glance armour 10.

>Dakka: Dropped BS to 2 to fit with Ork baseline stats, and their Gauss Flayers become Zappy Shootas - just Ork Shootaz with the gauss special rule, A BS 2 Zappy Shoota and a BS 4 Gauss Flayer seems to either be equal or to favour the latter at first glance, but I imagine this would be the main point of contention or source of imbalance.

>Ardness: Once reanimation protocols was taken out, turns out 'ard boyz and Necron Warriors are exactly as tough as one another. No brainer to just leave it as is.

>Morale: The excellent morale of a Necron Warrior has been traded down for the crummy one of an Ork, but in exchange they gain Mob Rule. Seems like a fair exchange to me, and I did it just because its more fluffy not to gain any advantage.

>Overall: I tried to keep it as close to a Necron Warrior in combat ability, and an 'ard boy in crunch as possible and it seems to me that it would be a fair equivalent. But of course, others may disagree

I think it sounds pretty interesting. I'd be up to go against it.

Awww yes, I'm glad to hear that.

I love making custom stuff, but was worried it'd be as OP and downright nasty as most of the other homebrewed units I've seen

Since people seem to think these guys are reasonable, I'll continue working on other ideas I've had and see what come sup.

how about furious charge like the rest of the orks got? so on a charge they can glance armor 10 thats how the rest of the boyz do it.

I wasn't sure whether or not to add that. I'm certainly not opposed if the general consensus is that it wouldn't be overpowered.

I realy like this idea!

But fluff wise,... doesnt every bit of necron scrap just teleports away to the nearest tomb world to be ressurected/reused there? Or is that old necron fluff?

I'm hardly an expert on the Necrons, but I remember reading in their codex that their warriors self destruct if they cannot be recovered or teleportation is impossible.

So if teleportation is sometimes impossible... hells yes we can loot 'em!

Not to mention in this case the fluff behind the models is that WAAAGH Krumpit has just pillaged a Necron world, so if anything the bitz will be teleporting right into the hands of our Mekboyz.. and it's feasible that other Orks could get ahold of them too even if they personally didn't help sack some Tombworld or another.

Well, Necrons have a 3-stage 'return policy':

1 - Fix yourself here.
(if too badly damaged)
2 - Teleport to nearest TombShip/homeworld
(if impossible)
3 - fry every single circuit, becoming useless man-shaped bits of metal. AKA, this stage...

Im also really fond of this idea.

I also think you should do a 'Choppy Destroyer' unit...

The pic in the OPs post makes me think of these.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Lol thats exactly what I'm working on - fantastic name btw, if you don't mind me borrowing it!.

But this is a much harder thing to balance compared to the Tin 'eads, so I've gone through several stages of adding rules and such and then taking them away because I want to keep it simple.

Right now the current concept is to be able to purchase riders for it, Orks or Grots leaning over the side and firing or stabbing at the enermy. Orks add to choppiness and toughness and grots are more accurate with mounted guns / could perhaps repair it in some way like Grot riggaz.

As always, the model should be a reasonable stand-in for several options - in this case "Looted Necron Destroyers / Heavy Destroyers (aka standard Necron models with standard rules as Ork allies)", a "Looted Destroyer Lord" perhaps, as well as Ork Deff-koptas, or custom 'choppy destroyas'

The pic in the OPs post makes me think of these.

That blog is amazing, thanks for that. Kustom builds are my second favourite part of wargaming after unit fillers.

heh the ork in me sees everything as conversion material for my army. I picked up the guass rifle out of the bit box of my friend and went "Yaknow if i put a bigass battery at the end of this cable that normally attaches to you necrons i can loot this easily!" lol

I want to have groups of shoota boyz kitted out with weapons from other races. That would be the necron one lol.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

That blog that Happyjew linked suggests that Lootas from earlier editions did just that.

Goddamn what a letdown to swap from any faction gun to generic deffguns.

I dont mind you borrowing it at all

I actually intended to make a combat Destroyer unit myself to better Synergise with a Dlord within my homebrew (kinda like what BA/SW are to Vanilla Marines)

Lootas used to be awesome fun. They had actual looted weapons from SM/IG. If they rolled a 1 to hit they hit their own unit. Nothing more entertaining than a squad of Lootas with Plasma Cannons wiping themselves out.
