Ok, this is now fixed as a plan. Mostly.

Depending on budget the front right quarter will either be a fairly simple murky river water feature, but if the client is willing to stretch a bit I'd like to do an unlucky Imperial adventurer getting nom-nommed by a school of piranhas and a wrecked row boat... Think it would push the contension for a trophy more than something uneventful...

Pics are a bit naff; I'm not equipped to take high quality photos of larger items. But they're clear enough to illustrate where I'm going with this.

Already looking awesome. I hope this turns out as cool as your warhound diorama.

Did you know that nobody makes decent rowing boat models in 28mm scale? I scratch built this one, and may make a couple of intact ones (both waterline and full-hull) for casting at some point in the near future.

Winterdyne? Golden Daemon? Well, it'd be rude not to subscribe really...

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

Looks like a lot of work went into that boat, winterdyne - and it looks all the better for it.

Well, there's been some progress since I updated this thread.

I still have several hours of sticking birch seed dividers to dyed string ahead of me. Fun times!

Wow, this is some beautiful work, very well done.
I love your attention to detail, its so important to have that on a diorama, and you've got it here in abundance.

I wonder if I could ask your opinion on painting techniques for old weathered stone, as i'm building an imperial cathedral terrain piece soon, and i'm not sure how to approach the painting.
I've already amassed a few ideas from people, but it would be nice to have your insight

Drrrrrrrryyyyybrush! With a biiig brush. I mostly use a 1" decorating brush for stuff like this. I've sanded the bristles a bit to soften them up, but it needs a light touch. I do have a 1" wedge sable brush, but I only break that out for softer work (final dusting touches etc).

Start with a darker browns (brown/grey, whatever), then wash with something like your earth tone (very watered down, don't leave splodges - almost a glaze) and then drybrush whatever colour your stone is (so here I went with a sort of tan colour, then a sandy colour). More steps make for a smoother, cleaner result. Fewer steps make it chalkier and rougher looking.

If doing flagstones etc, paint a few in different shades before drybrushing; it helps to break the uniformity and make things look more natural.

It's important to use whatever your 'earth' colour is in your dark mix - this effectively blends your stone into the ground and represents 'deep dirt'. Using a different colour will make the stone look different, like it came from somewhere else recently.

Final thing to do is add some greens and greeny-yellow stippling for lichen / mould. Especially toward the bottom of pieces.

That's excellent advice, and I like what you said about using the earth colour in the dark mix, brilliant, thank you

Good to see some progress on this, winterdyne, following our chat outside Warhammer World at the FW pen Day - have you had chance to test-pour the water effects yet, to see how they work?

Looks fantastic, you have an enviable talent for diorama composition (and painting, GS and so forth). Had the pleasure of seeing your previous piece at Games Day last year, was one of the highlights of the day (and one of the few that didnt empty my wallet).

No, not done any test pours yet. Possibly next week, still have ground work to carry on with.

That is stunning. I'm glad you went with the adventurer and rowboat idea, having something dreadful happening to a human will the Lizardmen pass by unconcerned really adds a little something to the feel of the diorama.

Cant wait to see it once you've added the water effect, will that be the very last thing you add?

Yes, the last thing will be the water, for a number of reasons;

1) I need to finish all the roots and anything that will hang in before pouring it. Also all the little fishes.
2) I need to enamel the base edges before PVA'ing on the dam to hold the resin in. Hopefully it won't leak.
3) If I did it before finishing everything else and it went wrong I'd be pretty gutted, and maybe demotivated from continuing. Need the motivation and focus as I have another commission that needs entering in GD (possibly AoP) this year that's not very far along.

A while since I updated this thread; but work's progressed.

Here's the first 5 of the Temple Guard that will be accompanying the Stegadon... I may tweak the turquoise on the headdresses...
