Subject: Can someone help me with Impetuous?

Me and a few friends tried out a quick, 3 model each, bare bones rules starter game the other day. Literally, just orders, ARO's and moving and shooting. None of the cover, camo or skill rules yet. We just wanted to get the very basics down before we jump in. That being said I've had my eye on this game for a while and have a printed out copy of both the downloaded version of the rulebook and the unofficial re-edit. I went for an ALEPH force after being drawn in by the Naga sniper model, but I'm also looking at a Myrmidon force, cause space Greeks would be awesome! And Ajax is pretty. What I can't get my head around is the Impetuous rule. From reading the book and looking at the wiki http://infinitythegame.wikispot.org/impetuous_Order, it looks to me like if I did a complete Myrmidon force, with say 5 models (for ease of numbers) I would have 11 orders? One specific to each model, the free Impetuous order, one order granted per model and the Lt order? So before I moved with any of my models I would have to do each ones Impetuous order first, moving all the force forwards, towards the enemy. Following this I would then have 6 orders to spend on the force?
I think I'm understanding correctly, but I honestly can't see a downside to this, except for rushing out into the open and generating half a ton of ARO's in the Impetuous part of my turn. It just doesn't seem fair to have double the number of orders to a similar sized force made up of non-impetuous models.

I'm pretty sure they all get Frenzy not Impetuous, so you'd have to cause 5 wounds, 1 per Myrmidon, to get to 11 orders. You'd start with 6.
To cut down on AROs from your eventual impetuous orders however, look up combined orders. Plus, Myrmidons are frakkin hard to hit!

Impetuous is pretty awesome.
If you want to cancel it, you spend a different order. You can, however, move 4 inches and then drop smoke somewhere, for example.

You essentially have it right. It is a FREE order. But you are compelled to move TOWARDS an enemy in sight or their deployment if they are not in sight. One of the two parts of the order must be a move skill. See wiki below.

Correction, sight is not required. You go toward the nearest enemy model that your model can get to the fastest.
When engaged in an Impetuous Order, the miniature must move directly towards the closest enemy figure (The one that can be reached in the shortest time possible) in any direction, even if he is not in LOF but the miniature is aware of its presence.
@ OP - the downside is the fact that you have to move directly toward the nearest enemy. More often then not if your enemy is setup properly that means your model is getting shot out of cover. At the low cost games it's not an issue for your myrmidons, but when MSV2 and templates start becoming common it becomes more of a death sentence. You opponent can also bait you in certain directions as well.

Cool, thanks for all the replies! I see my mistake too, Myrmidons start with Frenzy and if they cause a wound they gain Impetuous. Cheers guys!

Yep that is a huge boon to Myrmidons. By the time they have caused a wound with those short weapons of theirs they are typically near you opponent's board side. So when impetuous kicks off it's usually a good this for them.

For what it's worth, Myrmidons themselves are Frenzy (not impetuous) by default, but the Ajax you showed interest in is Impetuous.

It's a pretty nice rule while it's still fresh - but after being on the receiving end of it a few times, had a particularly nice moment when some impetuous highlanders decided to run into an HMG that was laying down suppressive fire, as BlueDagger mentioned chasing some 'bait' that was set up across from them - their kilts didn't really give them much protection (although perhaps spending an order to save them would have been wise then!)

Remember that you will not run into a suppressive fire zone with Impetuous:
A miniature’s movement portion of the Impetuous Order permits it to move to avoid Suppression Fires, Mines and E/Maulers, but is compulsory to move the least distance possible while doing so.

I guess it makes perfect sense - even the most aggressive loon would understand that running directly into an HMG firing would be a bad idea!

Either sight or "being aware of the enemy" is required to advance towards the enemy. LoF blocking works as works walking backwards.
How Impetuous works:
1. Are there models in the model's Zone of Control (8" bubble around the model)?
- If yes, go towards the closest.
- If no, go to 2.
2. Are there models in the model's Line of Fire?
- If yes, go towards the closest model in LoF.
- If yes, go to 3.
3. Go towards the enemy board edge - you must be closer to it in the end of the movement than in the beginning of the movement. Also, you can't go towards your own table edge at any time of the Impetuous move unless you absolutely have to.

No you got it wrong, Blue has it.
Basically you must move towards the nearest enemy model on the table, and there is nothing about move towards your table edge. It only matters were the nearest enemy model is. Note model not markers.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor. |

Actually you do indeed move toward the enemy deployment zone but that is only if there is not enemy models on the board and only enemy markers.
@kaap - That is a common misconception. "aware of" is just a fancy term for enemy models and not markers. Models are "aware of" anything that is a physical model on the board thanks to satellites etc. They are not "aware of" camo markers, impersonators, etc.
