With gw prices so darn high, I wanted to minimize costs, even at the expense of game play/army composition...
So what hq & 2 troops would be most expensive points wise? Then what other extemely high point mini/unit should be chosen?
Also a small army (model count) of under 20ish would be great since I usually play quick games, but usually at 2k, for fun.

Depends really, you can boost points up quickly, but the army will be in no way effective.
HQ: Flyrant x2
Troops: Ripper swarms
Heavy: Fex broods, as many upgrades as you can to push points up.
Could make it with 8 MC's and some rippers quite easily.

Homicidal Veteran Blood Angel Assault Marine
north of nowhere

Simple: Swarmlord with Tyrand Warrior squads (2 broods of 6) then 3x fexes for the rest. 436 with the dex. Optionally, get 3x Battleforces (375) and the codex (33) count the genestealers as Ymgarl genes, give all the gaunts upgrades and that's a good semi-swarm army with 4+ troops and make 1 squad of 8 Warriors and use a warrior as a tryanid prime. 138 models as opposed to 16, cheaper and plays like bugs should: squishy and more thanyou have bullets in your gun. Oh and if you kit em to the max they are also about 2300 pts so you have some extras
all prices in USD at GW pricing. Battleforces on ebay are 99 as opposed to 125, so itd shave 75 off the price as well

Cool, flyrant on ebay avg $60 x2, ripper swarm base avg $2 a base on ebay, large tyranid to make fex broods avg $45 ea oon ebay...
Hmmmmm, should just buy a balanced, used, assembled tyranid army on ebay. That would cost less by far....

QFT. but ebay their 99, same price as the others. Plus makes it cheaper to do than a sheer MC army and makes it more tactically flexible as you get a variety of unit types.

OK, here we go. 2000 pts 11 models total. 2000 pts even. I'm not really sure how to reduce it to fewer models.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. You could probably run tyranid warriors, carnifexes, tervigons, and other big creatures and such.

Cheapest would be to try and find an army deal from someone here or on Ebay.
Otherwise, don't buy anything because without knowing 6th ed changes there's no way to predict what will be effective in the new nid codex.

You could always try to fit four Flyrants and six Heavy Support monsters into 2k, since you get a double FoC.
You'd need four units of ripper swarms, though.

Still quite expensive, though. Grey Knights is probably the army for the budget gamer.
