Terrain placement. For example the bunker I go to used to have nothing but custom built tables. They each had a theme, style, etc. You had the desert table with very little cover everyone for the most part hated it. You had urban tables, alien tables, etc.

Now you just get a bunch of battle boards and then you roll for random terrain. Everyone just grabs whatever...end result table looks like hodge podge saturday night beer and pretzels let's proxy some soda can dreadnaughts stuff.

That's not what I load all my stuff up for, and drive an hour+ to go spend a day playing for.

It just shouldn't look like the warp swallowed up 3 or 4 completely different planets, and then took a dump. Yes please go grab that large chaos shrine with it's lava base, and plunk it down in the middle of this snow covered table...Perfection! lol

So not so much a rules issue but when choosing the next piece of terrain you plunk down...consider the table a little first.

Practically every one I know doesn't even bother with that stuff. We just say
"ruins?"--"yeap"--"magical crap?"--"nope"
"forest?"--"yeap"--"eat my face plants?"--"nope"
in the end we just don't bother at all. a battle of 500pts and a 4x4 board then yest its nice to get that other worldly feeling but when your pushing 2000pts of guard around...nah thanx

I play CSM and Daemons at the moment. There's enough charts and rolls for me to keep track of already.

I like the IDEA of the terrain rules, but would like my 1500 pt games to finish the day I start

Terrain placement rules aren't compulsary. If you want to use a certain board, use it.

The wife and I ignore it, though we do use the "mysterious" terrain thing in conjunction with objectives just for the fun of it. Other than that we just sorta toss terrain around the board until we are satisfied with the looks.

I prefer well-built custom tables myself. Makes for a coherent narrative.

terrain is also the most optional rule in the game. Even my group doesnt follow it and we dont have accurately themed terrain. We just roll 2D6 + Players and throw the pieces wherever. The 6 segments tends to ALWAYS make a cityscape field.

When we play we use the D3 per board segment. We then take three sections each and populate them before knowing which side we'll be deploying on.

technically thats how its suppose to be, since choosing sides means nothing if theres no terrain up. Which makes the rule you must place fortifications and ADLs before terrain rule completely stupid and worthless.

How are you suppose to place it first and have it in your deployment if you havent picked deployments yet?

And people always put massive terrains in front of the ADL, which makes no sense because its a damn FORTIFICATION which means my boss man said this spot here is important so build me a damn wall with a gunline to enforce it! why would he do that behind a building....

The best way to play it IMO is to set up terrain, roll for mission and deployment type, pick sides, deploy fortifications. You can either move terrain to fit fortifications or just set the fortification up where you like.

And ignore the 3" rule with terrain, its dumb.

I think the 3inch rule was just there to prevent people from completely jacking over ADLs as well as forcing a funnel in the battlefield. If you took every big piece of terrain you had and made a big wall in the middle with 1 entrance, only jump/jet/skimmer/flying would be able to avoid this insanely awesome choke point.

Thats about the only time i'll call someone out on that rule. Its a complete dick move to deny your entire opponent's army from moving across the board except through this 6inch gap.

Of course this problem is completely solved by placing Terrain before you know the mission and who's deploying where.

The BRB says make the board look badass,
it just says if you cannot agree on terrain you can do the d3 trick
also I like to know how the terrain is set before picking a side, otherwise its slowed

Automatically Appended Next Post:
also I do that mission near the back of the book that is a 4 way battle,
500 points each on a 4x4, everyone has a 1 square foot DZ
and when you pick first and then place terrain everyone just grabs a building and puts in right on there 1 square foot
its stupid

also "slowed" was not the exact word i typed above^^ lol

Yeah, I always ask if we can just set up terrain first. Virtually always my opponents say no, and we roll, but I still offer. Every once in awhile I get to just go crazy though.

And yeah, our FLGS is one of the MANY who just ignore the random terrain thing.

I can see where GW was coming from when they added it to the game, but... come on...

my local FLGS completely ignores this section. also bigger tourneys as well since its already hard enough to balance every table when you have dozens.

sometimes the BRB rules have to be overlooked for simplicitys sake.

At first we used the D3 per 2' by 2' square method (along with placing fortifications first) and quickly discovered two things.

1. Terrain was sparse, giant gaps and massive firing lanes were everywhere which heavily favors gunline armies (and we have a Guard player).

2. The player taking an ADL would always get screwed over as the opponent would just plop down the biggest piece of terrain available right in front of the line (and gun).

Now we just set up the terrain before picking deployment zones and make sure it looks good and actually offers cover while still keeping several firing lanes open. Fair for both players is the idea.

Cinematic terrain placement is idiotic.
