Subject: Getting into WFB, curious about what I got

Hey everyone, my girlfriend and I were looking for something to do together, and after going to the closest LGS, she picked WFB. Her main reason was the Arachnarok spider they have on display, as well as the other spiders that the Gobbos use. After spending a day off, I managed to track down some bargains at most of the local LGSs, and I'm just curious if what I got is worth it
Her army is Orcs and Goblins, I got the old battalion and some other goodies:
1 Big Boss on foot
1 Mounted big boss
40 Boyz
20 night goblins
10 spider riders
1 boar chariot
As for mine, I found quite a bit of the Empire units relatively cheap, and picked this up:
1 General on foot
1 General mounted
20 state troops
20 handgunners
8 reiksguard
1 Great Cannon/Mortar (isnt assembled yet)
So, just wondering if these would he good starter armies, and what I could do to expand upon them once we learn the basics. I know we both need wizards, that's first on my list when I get paid next.

Thats a decent start for both of you.
You'll also both want a BSB.
I'd get her a couple Spear Chukkas/Doom Divers to counter your Great Cannon/Mortar.

Sorry for the noob question, but what's a BSB? And I think I was looking at the Doom Diver. I also thought about some fanatics just for shiggles, and the fact that they're cheap.
Also, is there any way to convert some regular boyz into arrer boyz? I don't want to pay $17 for 3 models...

Battle Standard Bearer. Allows all the units nearby to re-roll failed leadership tests. Almost mandatory now a days so one bad roll of the dice doesn't crumple your battle line.

Ork Archers?! HERESY! I'd look into Night Goblin archers. Cheaper and and about as good in shooting very little pointy stickz.

Ah gotcha. And should I make the night gobbos and the spider riders into archers?
Also, if I got a goblin warboss on a gigantic spider, can he go in the same unit as the spider riders, since they're night goblins? She saw the model online tonight and liked it... I need some justification to buy it lol

I have them. I couldn't find anything about the spiders otherwise, I'm just trying to get the community's opinion on it.

Unless explicitely stated, every character can join every unit, even with non-matching bases, the rules for those cases can be found on p. 98, BRB.

Alright, thank you. I actually did the math last night and figured out that going off what I currently have, I can make two exactly 818-point lists between the two armies

So after some reading, I'm conflicted on what I should build my state troops into. Halberders, swordsmen, or spearmen?
I'm leaning towards halberders, I'm just curious on what is considered the best.

Halberds, if for no other reason than the strength 4. Wounding orcs on 4s in stead of 5s is a beautiful thing.
Swordsmen are a bit expensive for what they do.

Yeah I like the Swordsmem, the extra WS is good, but Halberders are probably always going to be a better choice. Especially later on when you start to buff them and give them bonuses from the War Alter and Hurricanum.
