Lincolnton, N.C.

My army is rip roaring and ready to go, and now it's time to paint. Only problem is I have no idea 'what color' I want to paint them. Fluff wise they are a mechanized penal legion, given the most beat up transports and vechiles availble and sent to clear minefields, scout around and meet the enemy nose to nose. And also raid, loot, and scavenge anything not nailed down. (Not the offical listed MO but officers turn a blind eye)

Anyway I found this little gem: http://web.archive.org/web/20051029090150/http://uk.games-workshop.com/imperialguard/flash-painter/1/

And though not great I did play with it to make some uniforms.

Now here is the break down

1. Pros: It's the way they look on my DoW army painter and it looks cool, especially on the tanks, the painter doesn't do camo, but the pants are camoed.
Cons:It's...I dunno if I want to paint upwards of 140 models in so much...grey.

2. Pros: It's a theme, from my favorite game and the Fallout universe is wicked quirky and still dark, just like 40K. In fact imagening the home world a bit like a worldwide D.C. Wasteland. I also have alot of 'tech' conversions that'd give a Techpriest a heart attack, thanks to Snrub's guide on making special weapons. (Not to mention I made my own PG out of an Ork gun and parts, and a Lascannon HW team from a missile launcher, and chimera multilaser, and stuff...and a lot more. Also my Colonel has a mini for Dogmeat by his side.
Cons: My biggest fear is someone has done this before. And plus I am going to be sorely tempted to add Orgyns and paint them up to be Super Mutants...

3. Pros: I have a small guard army painted like this, so a majority is already in this scheme as well as a Russ.
Cons: In 2001 I like it, now I hate it and want to strip it Sooooooo badly.

4. Pros: It really sells 'penal legion' and being bright orange screams "Hey I'm a scum ball shoot me!" My army is a composite of Cadian, Catachan, and Valhallans and the orange accross the board should look good.
Cons: I already have my Blood Tigers, and as the name suggests...yeah soooo much orange paint.

5. Pros: I have a lot of hues of green, and glow in the dark paint and glitter paint...
Cons: Green is so...normal

6. Pros: Fits the colors of my desert world terrain. Kinda easy to paint and shade.
Cons: Brown like Green is plain...

7.Pros: Pink and Purple, with Mithral Silver and Gold...gaudy as hell, visible, slightly emusculating/humbling to the prisoner.
Cons: I like jokes but this might be too much.

8. Pros: Muted colors but still simple...plan on a mossy colored pattern on the uniform.
Cons: It's meh...it's not exciting and really want to enjoy painting.

9.Pros: Another bright 'Shoot Me!' design, it's be hard to paint but it'd certainly catch the eye.
Cons: Kinda similar to Praetorian and Vostoryan colors...and I hate those two regiments.

10. Pros: Cause my favorite colors are black, gold, and carolina blue
Cons: Doesn't fit the army BG and will only look nice on Cadian models.

So...also my Blood Tigers are orange, my Dark Eldar are metallic blue and black, and my Red Corsairs are dark red and black...like the IG to not share anything with my other armies.

I completely vote for the Orange!

it would look great with stenciled ID numbers on their backs!

If you decide to go with another scheme I may just steal that one!

You have my permission to steal it.

But yeah if they made stencils small enough I'd most certainly do that. I might do it free hand but it might come off as amaeturish.

My vote goes to the either the prison jumpsuit or fallout ones, the Fallout one winning by a slight edge.

Go orange power! I think it has the best feel for the force you are trying to paint and theme!

Number 4 wins it for me. And they do make small rub-on letter transfers, most hobby shops that have model railroad supplies will have these transfer sheets that would work great for numbers.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

Go for the Pink and Purple.
Then you can name your Commisar/HQ/Warlord Sherriff Arpio and call your Army the Maricopa County Legionaires.
(if your from the US you will get the references and the color).

Your Army banner could even be the State of Arizona Flag.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

Haha actually that's where the pink and purple idea came from.

I went with black armor for mine, and I'm not to fond of it. You either overdo it on the highlites and it's more grey than black, or it's too dark and you don't get any details coming through.

I really like 2 and 4. And 8 to a lesser degree.

If it helps, I painted my army in a way similar to #2, here's how it looks:

If I go #2 I think I might make the brown a bit darker maybe even black, and include the yellow numbering and lines the marks a 'vault dweller'

The orange one works well. There's also the classic black and white striped prison uni's.

Given the fact that your army is given the leavin's of other detachments, I'd say take a look at the paint schemes for IG vehicles in the IA books, if you haven't. So many good examples, and explanations of why they are the way they are, unit designations, etc.

It'd be cool if you could rig it up to have them chained together like chain gangs. You'd have to use actual little chain to provide any kind of range of motion of the unit. I don't know that it's actually feasible, but it'd be interesting.

Also, though it doesn't necessarily fit with your theme, I think an entire IG army with iridescent glitter paint on armor, tanks, everything. Righteous. I've seen people do digitized camo before, but I'd really like to see a good Marpat or Multicam job.
