hello dakka,

trying to wrap my head around some of the DE vehicle upgrades. I want to make sure I understand how best to use them.

splinter racks let you re-roll misses for any splinter weaponry fired by passengers. sounds awesome if you only move 6". however, your raiders are probably moving 12" or more most turns, which means you're either not shooting at all or re-rolling snapshots. the mental image of parking 12" away from a target and unloading a full broadside of splinter shots that get re-rolls is a beautiful, beautiful thing. the reality is that raiders are made out of wet paper and will rarely live long enough to get that shot. are splinter racks worth the 10pts?

on to night shields. these effectively reduce the range of people shooting at you by 6", iirc (paraphrasing, as I don't have my codex to hand). so, you can park 19-24" away from those space marines with bolters, shoot them in the face and they can't shoot back (until it's their turn to move, etc.). given that you have to account for your opponent's next movement phase and that everyone can pre-measure everything in 6th, just how useful is this? I can imagine scenarios where it could be, but it's unclear to me just how often those scenarios present themselves and if they justify the cost of an upgrade on a vehicle with a very short life expectancy. worth it?

cheers and happy friday.

Splinter racks: When moving 12 your only hitting on 6's, so having them doubles your damge potensial each turn. When within 12 your damage is off the hook, i regularly hit with ALL splinter weaponary using them. Also worth there weight in gold vs FMC. Works great in conjuction with nightshields.

Nightfields make weapon ranges 6 inches less. While this doesnt help vs a las cannon it makes, with a canny user, the raider almost invincable to bolter fire. How it works it hover the raider at the full 24 inches where you can only reach a single marine, or the same but at 12 inches. IMPORTANT! take a splinter cannon, i will explain later.

Shoot all your splinter rifles (racks help) and hopefully kill the marine, your opponet says the rest of the wounds are lost. Laugth and say no, because the splinter cannon is 36 inch range wounds can be allocated to any model with in that range, even if the rifle itself only has range 24. so you will kill marines 25-6 inches away. This way you kill enough so even with a full move they are probabilly ut of range, or maybe one or two is. This works at raneg 12 as well, but insted of not being able to shoot, they will only shoot one shot.
