Well "that gray" is a very unspecific definition of a color. And even official artwork may varry slightly in tone.
And relictors are basicly grey marines with black shoulders.
Just use the grey you like more. And depending on your painting skills you could try mixing colors or try a black wash to darken your grey to a shade you think fits better.

Or alternatively supply us with an actuall reference picture for what you are going for. Or is it one of those two or the picture in codex:SM?

do some test minis...use a shade slightly lighter than you think that way when you hit it with a wash, it will darken to what you like.

Try two or three test minis, using metal if possible (they strip easier later).

I would prolly use a grey primer, later hit with a black wash with a small amount of gunmetal type paint in it.

I have been collecting Relictors for a while, i normally paint this way:

1) Undercoat black
2) Basecoat with Mechanicus Standard grey
3) Wash black
4) Highlight further with dawnstone and then Administratum Grey.
6) Paint Shoulderpads and kneepads with Vajello german grey.
7) Use greens for eye lenses.

Looks good in my opinion, i don't have any pics (should get around to that) up but the grey is close to the second helmetless picture.
