I am trying to figure out what color I should paint my tau army like this

The Frozen North

Why not go with the District 9 style white with orange markings? And I guess between those two, how did you want to base them? The blue would be good for urban and rocky bases while the orange would be good for desert style basing.

How would you even do a rocky base. I have the modeling kit from games workshop with the rocks but how do I get the big rocks that the models stand on.

Go into the garden and find some pebbles, et voila, basing rocks Just remember to wash them thoroughly before youtry to do anything with them. Rubble for urban bases is easy to make out of old sprue. Desert basing is easy to do with some simple sand.

How would you make it from an old sprue. I mean big rocks that you can stand on not small rocks.

For big rocks go into the garden and find something that looks right. The sprues you cut up into small chunks and use as small chunks of concrete or tarmac or bricks or other urban type rubble.
