Hi all,

Some twenty odd years ago, I picked up the original Rogue Trader from the shelf of a comic book store and played a bit with my friends. This was before the add-on books (Compendium etc.) had been published, so the game was super wide-open and - as 13 yo's - we had absolutely no clue what we were doing. We certainly didn't have the money to buy whole armies of figures... I recall games being played with one blister pack's worth of figs for each squad (mostly unpainted to boot), with the remainder represented by pennies. Those were the days, but we all dropped the game as we got into high school...

While I stopped playing GW stuff, I've played nearly everything else (board games, Magic, RPG's, hex-and-counter wargames, video games) over the years. And I still found the occasional reason (Space Hulk, board game figs) to paint a couple of minis and have always enjoyed it. My son is 5 yo now and absolutely loves joining me on trips to the local game shops. On the last one, he decided he wanted to paint some minis, which got me fired up to do more painting than I have been. So I decided to scrounge up some old figs from my old WFB box for him and a new tac squad of marines for me. At the rate I paint, and with the free time I have, I'm not sure I'll ever get to the point of having a playable army. But if I do, my son will probably be able to read and understand the rules himself by then - perfect!

So I'm mostly just painting and enjoying fluff for the moment, not really gaming. I'm not sure why I knew this site (maybe a link from Boardgamegeek?), but it seems like a friendly enough venue, so why not? No real questions at the moment, but I'll probably post a few things in the Modelling forum in the next couple of days as I work out a not-insanely-detailed painting process for my Ultramarines and eventually decide what else I should paint up.

Cheers!
Todd

Thanks all for the kindly welcome!

I just finished a test fig for my Ultramarines and I think he looks right decent for a relatively quick job, but he needs a bit more drying time before I hit him with a final dullcote and snap some pics. I assembled a few more guys and seem to be getting better at scraping mold lines, which is far and away my least favorite part of the process. And I got my sergeant's arms magnetized - nifty trick that. Not surprisingly, the Internet makes the whole painting and modeling process a whole lot more accessible than it was 20 years ago!

I'm looking forward to the next few months, as work should be relatively light and leave a good bit of time for painting. If I do decide to play at the local shop, I think I could have a respectably painted Ultramarine force done by mid-summer.

See you around!

Welcome back, and welcome to dakka!

You will find the rules of the game have changed dramatically, but the same passion and enthusiasm for painting and modeling.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

Welcome back, I didn't think there were really any rules for 40k apart form Rogue Trader. Well, they are there but they don't really count.
