I am an Empire player and I have a mounted General, 20 great swords, 20 swords men, 20 halberdiers, ten gunners, ten archers (state troops) 16 Knights, 5 Pistoliers and a Warrior Priest. I know that everyone is gonna ask for my play style but I'm still new to fantasy so frankly I'm not really sure! If YOU were to pick the next thing I buy for my army what would it be?

I think an important question to ask is what size of game
Because at larger games you're going to need more bodies. For State troopers a min of 30 per unit imo
Also warmachines. Pretty rare to see an empire army without their cannons. A wizard and possibly a BSB could be quite useful.

They say you never appreciate what you have until it is gone. I fear that isn't true for your mind. |

You have a pretty solid basis by the looks of things. You should add a wizard and a BSB whatever you do, BSB's are mandatory and empire wizards come pretty cheap points wise so they're a good investment. After that I think there are two ways you could go. Either get some artillery and go shooty or bulk up your infantry units and go combat orientated using the wizard and warrior priest for buffs.
(^^^So basically what those guys said^^^ )
If it were me I'd get more troops, I think empire armies aught to have at least one big unit of state troops, like 40+ men, with a magic banner if the empire general still lets you do that(?)

Thanks for the advice! Do you guys have a preference between a Hellblaster and a Great Cannon? I've also heard that in the new edition mortars are not a good investment

Traditionally, Empire first loads up on cannon to deal with monsters, something they're not very good at otherwise, and then takes the nifty stuff. Also, a Helblaster on its own isn't particularly good. Only with an additional Engineer does it become effective.

A friend of mine pointed out that a Hellblaster really costs 185 points, 65 of it out of the hero section.
