So, I had been using a combination of bubblewrap, packing foam and a harbio tub along with ockets to transport my armies, mainly because I have enough ork infantry to completely fiull the tub to the top if i throw in a few bikes and such. But I recently got given a whole bunch of old school beastmen, chaos warriors, some squats, all in metal that I'd like to keep as intact as possible alongside my scenic based Tyranids, because alot of work went into making thme look awesome. But I need a real case to transport them, I'm just not sure what I'm looking for exactly, so rather than guess, I'll just ask!

I had looked at getting a case from KR thorugh Total Wargamer but after a month of nothing, it took me another week and a half to cancel it, so I looked at Kr's site, the same case seemed to be alot more expensive, making me now seek a more affordable lternative. I could get the big citadel army case but I'd rather not, I dont like bulky heavy plastic cases, I'm looking for something more comfortable.
What tray selecion would I need for example, for a battlewagon? Or a trukk? I'm sure if I can fit a battlewagon into something, I can make my Flyrant and Carnifex fit, but what would I need?I'm also looking to spend no more than £60-70, so UK based would help with shipping costs, but what would be a good choice? Is there a good, affordable battlefoam case that would fit my needs, or a KR? Maybe some fairly unknown company has a great deal on something different...can anyone help?

For your big vehicles and creatures, unless you want to pay big money for special custom battlefoam or whatever, plastic boxes are best. For infantry, I know this might sound heretical, but I actually like GW cases best, especially for value of what you're getting. Maybe you don't like the big plastic cases, but I think they're actually pretty useful.
This one is my favorite http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440149a&prodId=prod1095470

if you want to shell out more cash, battlefoam.com is best though (be warned, they are still bulky). I can't think of any affordable companies that can make what you need.

Good luck

KR Multicase, Battlefoam and Sabol are the principle manufacturers these days. I think KR offers the best entry-level options if you go for simple foam trays and card cases. You can then buy a more rugged container for the card cases from them at a later date and/or ads more card cases as and when you need to expand your storage. The card cases stack really well on shelves our in a cupboard, to keep them out if the way, and you can easily write on them to remind yourself of thrower contents; essential for a large, diverse collection.

Just a a quick parenting help note: Anything you plan on doing in the next two years, do before the baby comes. This includes baby-proofing the house. My workspace is in my basement, so it was a simple as putting a child safe lock on the doorknob. But if you have minis on the shelf, or a paint station in the corner, that needs to be taken care off. Unless you are looking for something to post in the next "worst thing that happened to my minis" thread. or a trip to the ER.

On the topic of cases, there are a lot of good options out there. People have different preferences, and each has their pros and cons. They range from homemade boxes for a few bucks and hours of work, to custom laser cut foam. Which one is best is a frequent topic, and there is no definitive answer. From the research I've done, I lean towards KR, but that's just my preference.

Well for US gamers I always recommend Portable Warfare. Love my bag and need another.

I recommend Pelican cases for price and ruggedness. More protective than anything sold as actual miniature transport IMO

That pelican case seems like a pretty awful case to me. The OP was looking for something inexpensive, not bulky and plastic and holds a lot of models..

It's 150$ (270 MSRP!) for a bulky plastic case.. sure it can protect your miniatures well but why are you throwing them down flights of stairs to begin with or submerging it in a lake? Also it's 19x11x8 usable space which isn't large in the slightest. Battlefoam 1520 with half pluck foam is 195$ and is 17x15x25. When a carrying case costs MUCH more than the most premium of wargaming cases there is a serious problem with said case.

Not trying to be harsh but pelican just seems like the worst possible case for wargaming if you want efficiency in price vs size.

15 bucks, with foam and hard sides. When converted it can hold nearly 180 minis. Even if not converted, it can hold around 100 or more.

What kind of foam do you typically use for this? I've been looking into something like this for flying with mini's, but none of the typical "mini foam" manufacturers fit this exactly (of course). Reason being, I want to maximize space, and pluck and pull just doenst cut it.

I would honestly just use the included pluck foam. Of you could source denser foam and cut it out yourself.

Any case will do. The issue is the so called pretty cut floam crap that Romeo and ilk keep spooging off on the uninformed.

You can buy the stuff by the roll, get as many as you need plastic tackle boxes with the compartments for about 3 bucks each and a pair of scissors.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

GW cases are fine as long as your army is entirely infantry models. As soon as you need to start cutting larger gaps for anything bigger, their capacity skrinks considerably. Then you need to start buying multiples, which rampes up the cost. A single, larger Battlefoam/KR case may have a higher initial cost, but it'll fit more, reducing the need to buy multiple cases.

could you possibly lin ksomewhere that we could get the foam ?

I am thinking about getting a case sorted for my Ig army once it is finished and custom one is important for some of my models

Cheers

Wow, portable warfare is actually affordable. Thank you for that tip. I've been simply cutting my own black packing foam and hot gluing it together and using cardboard boxes for a couple of years now with great results, as well.

I like the 57$ cases they have, I can fit my FW with 2 in one slot, so a row of ten holds 20 miniatures.

Pluck foam or self cut just doesn't work I've found. If you've got unlimited space and are just driving to the game store it's fine, but I'm looking at it for flying to events, and for those you have to super-maximize your space. As much as everyone loves to rag on battlefoam (and I def. have plenty of my own gripes with them), their custom cut foam is way superior - if another company did it, I'd look to them, but they don't that I've found. When I bought battlefoam trays to put in my sabols, I probably fit 50-75% more models in my cases, which for me is the big deal rather than money.
