After reading through the IG codex in search of some allies for my Space Marines, I came across the Leman Russ Punisher. At first, the weapon looks great: 20 S5 shots? Um, yes? But then you do math, and you realize that, on average, you'll be wounding barely a fourth of that each turn, less if your opponent is Space Marines, and you begin to question why the tank is 180 points when you can have the Executioner, with its rather awesome plasma cannon, which is perhaps the best tank (aside from the standard Leman Russ, which is a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-killing-MEQ) IG can take.

There are a few options:
1- Make it twin-linked. Hitting is its biggest problem.
2- Give it AP6. Not a huge boost, but those Ork saves can make a difference.
3- Shred. Make sure it wounds.
4- Some combination of the above. If the weapon was S4, TL'd with Shred it could be a lot better.

What say you?

Twin linked doesn't make much sense unless there was an option to buy a second gatling gun for the turret (Which would look boss). AP 6 isn't game breaking so that's fine.

5) Make it twin-linked, put it on an AV 12/12/10 flyer with vector dancer, give it strafing run make it even more accurate, and then take 25 points off the price tag.

Oh wait, this is proposed rules, not actual rules.

Or, if you want it on a Leman Russ chassis, take it as a command / commissariat tank (not 100% if it's a valid option for these slots, but I seem to recal it is), making it BS 4

Alas you can't have siege tanks (punisher, demolisher, executioner) as command or commissariat vehicles. However, you could get a Techpriest with a Trojan as a dedicated transport , which gives a tank within 6 inches preferred enemy. Re rolling hits and wounds of 1 FTW (from IA 1 2nd ed).

I think 2 & 3 combined would be good fun, and not OP.

Shred is reroll to wound right?

I think just reroll to wound would be fine. The amount of shots this thing pumps out is enough.
