I've a fair bit of experience playing with DE but am still trying to figure out a few things. In all of the games I've played, when I take the Archon I always give him the shadowfield and almost unilaterally so have all my friends. I'm just wondering if there is any reason why I should take the clone field over the shadowfield?

"You stand accused of violence against Iyanden. That your crime has not yet been committed is of no consequence. The sentence is oblivion."

In a word no.
They are no use when shot at and D3 'blocks' is not enough to save your archon in most cases from horrible death at the hands of even an average combat hero. Stopping the odd power fist is ok but when they start waving around 5+ attacks... The CF does not stop you getting squished!

The Shadowfield is in almost every way better.
I like the mirror-image thing the clone field has going, but i'll still take the Shadowfield if i take one of the two.
A fair few of the DE wargear options are more for fluffy than useful. They are expensive, highly situational or just plain underwhelming.
I still use them for campaign play or fluffy lists where the wargear fits the character's fluff, but very few of them make my tournament lists.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Back in 5th, you could combine the clone field with triple shardnet bloodbrides, making the archon functionally immune to combat. With 6th edition CC rules, any punk with 2-3+ attacks and an S6 hit are going to eat through a clone field. Ghostplate is not strong enough to be a reliable second.
That said, dark eldar(and eldar) work by getting the first shot. The archon should be going first and owning in a challenge, but if something goes wrong, I would rather have a 2++ than negate 1-3 attacks.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

its 1-3 HITS not attacks, so a guy with 4 attacks on average will get 2 hits, and on average you will negate them. The problem is when he gets 3 hits and you negate 1.
