So the special rule "Gets Hot!" states that when a weapon with this special rule is fired, and the roll to hit is a result of 1, the firing model takes an automatic wound. It also states that the model can make armor saves.
Well, my friend was arguing that his Space Marine of Sv3+ firing a Plasma Gun of AP3 could indeed make the save, since the weapon wasn't actually fired at him, and the rule doesn't specify if the weapon's AP value is taken into account.
I argued nei, but he does make a point.
We just want to ask the community of this, and please keep in mind we both haven't played for very long.

I'm in your friends camp about what the rules say.
I haven't actually met anyone with a problem with armour saves to self inflicted plasma. Just laughter

The model wounded by Gets Hot wasn't shot with a plasma gun. They just suffered a wound. That wound doesn't have an AP. The model gets a save.

The SR makes no mention of the weapon attack profile and their are several weapons that have this rule. Assuming the AP of the weapon is unstated and as such is just that, an assumption.
No AP stated means no AP on the wound unless there has been an errata or FAQ saying otherwise.

Also have to remeber that in the event you get to reroll misses (sitting on the "Targetter" Objective or a Libby casts Prescience) you get to reroll those ones and only take the "Gets Hot" if you roll a 1 the second time.

It doesn't matter. It's a wound, not a wound from the weapon with Gets hot!

As precedent, you can have a look at how Perils of the Warp works. Ok, so that one doesn't allow saves but otherwise, the wording on taking a wound is pretty much similar. How would you work out the AP of that wound...?

You wouldn't, because it doesn't allow saves in the first place.
There's no need to confuse the issue. Perils has nothing to do with Gets Hot.
There is no AP, and models get their normal save. That's all there is to it.
