Nice idea - the redemptionists are little-played in my experience. Campaigns I've played have stuck to core gangs to try and ensure a bit more balance. As long as you've got a good campaign group go for it. Fluff makes necromunda good.!
Also don't get to downhearted if you're favourite guys get mushed.. It happens.

Don't think - DO!
My friend and I started playing (me Escher/him Orlock) a campaign a few months back, we haven't returned to 40k gaming since! After a few games your gang really starts to take on a character of their own and much like Perhow said, don't stress if one of your gangers gets mauled, its all part of the game. In our campaign its common for at least one ganger to end up with a permanent serious injury, just means you have to change your tactics!
Thats an awesome idea using the 40k Cultists, their pretty much a Necro gang ready to rock. Also have a look at the Warhammer Empire Flagellants - with a bit of conversion work they would fit in really well. If you are keen you could always get your hands on Cawdors and have them as 'counts as' - they basically look the same.
And make sure you have an Evicerator in your gang - those things are brilliant.

My local club has just started a necromunda campaign and I'm running a Redemptionist gang made up of chaos cultist and redemptionist models, they look good and fit well together as a gang. Automatically Appended Next Post: Quick pic. They're not really finished yet.

Come to think of it, it might be smarter to play as a gang your first run through, then play the Redemptionists. The outlaw/special gangs are neat, but they are just that.....special gangs. They really don't capture the full feel of the game.
Whether you play the same models as cawdor for a few rounds then retire the gang and play Redemptionists, or you buy a box of Cadians and play them as Van Saar for your first run, it's up to you. But that is my highly recommended advice.

I've never been a huge fan of Goliaths, they've never done well in any league I've taken part in.
Top dogs are usually Van Saar (techno skills are very powerful) or Escher.

Yeah, Eschers usually ran the show in a long run campaign in our group, but in the begining, I think Van Saar has it going on...Techno skill soooo rule.
