ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."
Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

ADB and Abnett come off as the only ones capable of writing real stories. I prefer ADB the best though. His drama is bueno.

Tough one. Abnett is very good with set pieces but I think ADB does better with individual characters, which is what I really like about BL novels. So for me, it's Aaron Dembski-Bowden!

I've only read Abnett, McNeill, Thorpe and Swallow so far. Out of them, I'd go with Swallow, but that is because I am biased. He is one of the very few authors who managed to write the Sororitas in a manner befitting their original background - largely sticking to the Codex fluff, and managing this very difficult balancing act between making a thoroughly indoctrinated character unique and likeable without taking away from their inhumanity and make them look "too normal".
It still was a tough choice.

Graham does by far the best with the stuff that makes warhammer what it is....war. His way of drawing battles in your mind are fantastic. A lot of his books feature massive battles that you are really awed by. I wish he wrote more often.

Abnett has put out the most consistently good work, imo, with the entire Eisenhorn trilogy being the creme de la crop of Black Library, and the Ghosts series being very solid as well. He has his flaws as a writer- the man can't write god damn ending to save his life -but all in all I find myself less irritated with his writing compared to the others. I used to think that ADB was my favorite, but I've realized that the only work of his I've thoroughly enjoyed was the Night Lords trilogy, and even that, I was kind of going "meh" at by the third book (though the ending was great). Don't mind McNeil, I really liked Angel Exterminatus, but his philosophical diarrhea grates after awhile. The books where it;s kept to a minimum (AE, Mechanicus) I enjoyed quite a bit.

I feel the same way about ADB and Void Stalker, I loved the other books in the Night Lords trilogy but the last one had me turning pages and getting bored. I hope that it's not a case that some of the other authors have, that as they churn out books the quality suffers. He seems to be avoiding it currently though thankfully, I haven't read Betrayer yet though, but reports have been rather praise worthy.

Although yeah, his endings are indeed typically rushed.

I'm re-reading Fulgrim just this moment, and I really enjoy it.....
But IMHO bad part of the book is how Fulgrim was swayed to join Horus....
I' mean one moment "the guy" is ready to whack him; next - Emperor is inperfect bastard.....
Chapter feels kind of rushed....

I voted for Abnett. His characters and world building set the bar for me. Also, though I like a good action film, I often find all-out action scenes in books a bit of a chore to read, and Abnett is one of the few authors who I think can write them in a genuinely exciting way. I also think he captures the insane scale and otherworldliness of 40K well, though he can contrast it nicely with the everyday minutiae. He has some flaws - like minor fluff errors and some irritating characters - but on the whole I think the quality of his writing overshadows these problems.
|
Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics. |
