Subject: Best way to protect Basilisks?

So far I've been using meltavets in chimeras. This is pretty effective, as the mobility of the chimeras allows me to concentrate my firepower where I need it, and will melt anything that doesn't have a strong invulnerable. But it has some problems, mainly being that it's boring. Shuffling around nothing but vehicles gets a bit dull after a while, I'd like to actually use my infantry models.
It also lacks offensiveness. This can make it difficult taking enemy objectives, especially if the game type/victory points don't go my way and I actually need to push up field.
So assuming around half of an army is made up of Basilisks, how would you fit the rest of the army around this? PIS will get shot and/or assaulted, and will do very little damage with their special weapons before they're killed. Veterans with cammo cloaks seem interesting, since they're pretty survivable and I tend to play on tables that have a lot of multi-story ruins. A few of them scattered around with plasma guns and lascannons will seriously bleed many enemy lists, but I don't know if they'd be tough enough to kill units before they were assaulted.
So what's the best way of complimenting basilisks in a guard list?

Determining on the number, bring a Skyshield. So much stuff ignores that stupid line, so why not a 4++ for 75 Pts?
Plus, high ground for your heavy weapons teams. You're guard, you'll have vendettas.

The best way to defend them is with a piece of LOS-blocking terrain.
The second best way to defend them is to accept that they're a 125 point open-topped vehicle, and that it's better to just spam more of them or to take something else with more latent durability than to spend a bunch of points to "fix" the basilisks.

Ailaros is on the money.
If at all possible, have your basilisks completely out of sight.
Failing that, target saturation is a good one. If they have 4 + units of special weapon vets & russes storming into the midfield and vendettas buzzing around dropping off troop squads, they wont want to put any firepower into the basilisks because of what they perceive as the more immediate threat.

Keep them off the table
Nah I agree with the others above, out of sight or surrounded to give cover. My younger brother uses them or manticores in most games and they work well. Usually get a few turns of shooting before I can manoeuvre enough to take them out.

So you guys don't think assault is a big risk with bassies then?

Only from space wolf scouts or grotsnik...
|
-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

No.
Furthermore, if your opponent somehow managed to get into assault with your giant pile of vehicles, you've got bigger problems, given that your chimeras and russes have the same rear armor, but are much more valuable.

For artillery, stay out of sight. If you cant trying bringing an aegis line and give them camo netting for a beautiful 3+ cover save. If your going foot guard have infantry surrounding it, but if your mech you may as well not worry about your enemy getting close because if they do then its about game over man.
