i'm looking at scratch building a harpy for my tyranid army, from what i have seen the best way to go about it is too use a trygon body, so i have bought myself another one and was thinking on using the spare wings from my hive tyrant that i made into a swarm lord,

Then possibly use green stuff to convert a carnifex head?

any advice would be welcome =]

I think it is possible, some people use Trygon heads becuase they are actually longer than a carnifex head (I know we all have a zillion spare fex heads sitting around). Few old posts on the subject from Dakka

I'm working on one my self ill have a vid up once I've finished it I think the best way is with a hive tyrant and a fex body with Trygon head I don't think the Trygon body and tail works that well. Good luck

The Winged Hive Tyrant lower body is an excellent dynamic pose for a Harpy and is more or less ready-made. Careful placement of a Trygon's upper body on it and then the wings would look quite good.

The larger cousin of this is almost nothing but Trygon, with clever use of pinning and sculpting to un-coil the tail quite a bit (the more the better, if nothing else much larger coils). The best one's I've seen of this variant have the tail spiralling below and behind them, rather than being just directly behind them (and this means you're going to have the body at between 45 and 90 degrees to the tabletop, rather than parallel to it).

For the head, you could use the Carnifex head, but be careful of it looking too puny. Modelling a suitable crest onto it would probably fix any problems there though.

I converted a Harpy a while before the proper Flyrant model was released. It used the plastic Balrog wings you can buy as bitz from the GW website or ebay, and the body of a 3rd-edition Hive Tyrant which has a long flowing tail with just the right shape. The head is from a 3rd-ed Zoanthrope, and it capped off with some spare HVC's. It worked out way cheaper than buying Trygon and HT kits to mix up.

I don't have a solo picture of the model, but it's in these full army shots if you zoom in (in front of the Zoanthropes):
