Hi guys. I am thinking about getting a Tau army because I like the idea of the Tau ethos, "for the greater good."
Plus I do like the look of the new models.

I'm slightly more veteran than a totally newbie to 40k but I don't know enough about Tau in game terms.
I'm also wary about picking up an army that just got a new codex. I don't play über competively but do like to try and win.

So basically I would like any information about Tau relative to the new codex etc before spending any money.

Hello and welcome to dakka

Tau pretty much require markerlight support now. So that means its is a good idea to take pathfinders, marker drones or equipping troops with marker lights.
Hammer heads and pulse rifles are just as powerful as last edition.
There is a lot of HQ flexibility in the new codex as apposed to the last one.

If you have a buddy who has the new tau codex, Bribe him so you can page through it and see if the rules are what your looking for.

When an army gets a new codex, this is the best time to get into it. You have a whole breadth of other players learning along with you on how to play the army. You also have that fun element of surprise for the uneducated folks who don't know what the Tau can do

Dunno about your meta, but in mine, Tau, Eldar, BT, and SoB are the least played. Those codecis sometimes throw me for a loop, but I have seen other players completely caught off guard!

As for the greater good, you need to realize that Tau are not Space Marines. Their army needs to be operated under the notion of synergy and not brute force.

The great thing about Tau is that they bro-fist with just about everyone. So unless you play 'nids, you can start a small allies force and expand into a playable army.

Tau are the first 6E codex I bought and I'm loving the reading. I will definitely be investing later this year or next year into a Tau army.

I've played marines and Eldar. It might sound weird but Iwas sufficiently better with Eldar whilst I never won anything with my marines.
I'm good with learning play types.

Would anyone say the codex is "good" or is it "average".
I've dabbled with cA and would say that codex is average in that it's balanced with nothing significantly game changing in it.
Unlike the C:CSM with the almight dragon of doom that basically completely alters your game.

Hello and welcome boniface.

Tau are a shooting army and only that. If you like the idea of a unit supporting another unit so it can kill things better, tau are for you.

Tau armies value planning in advance and the application of overwhelming firepower.

The newest codex is a good codex, it has some tricks but it's not unstoppable.

If you liked playing eldar, tau are for you.

The army needs some markerlights now, beyond that there's no bad choices. You can take battlesuits, no suits, riptides, no riptides, skyrays, hammerheads, sniper drones, broadsides, hell even vespid are worth their weight now.

I played one game over the weekend using the new codex, (didn't win because I was playing against my nemesis) but I see it being a good codex.
