Hey all, just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere online I could get a steel plate, circular about 300mm diameter and 5-10mm thick, in the UK?

Or if someone works at a metal workshop or anything? Trying to mount my super heavy flyer, I have some steel rod and I can weld it once I find the plate, the metal places near me have been pretty unhelpful.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried your local scrap yard?
Or B&Q?

12" circle of steel plate is going to be hard to source as that.

12" square of steel plate should be easy to find - any metal dealer should have that...as well as a lot of scrap yards.

A CNC plasma cutter or water jet will make it round for you - but those tend to run a bit for machine time. You can cut it with a grinding wheel fairly easily - though time consuming and likely to wear the wheel down a fair amount in the process.

Most of your actual machine shops should be able to get you sorted. Doing that sort of thing online tends to be a bit more expensive than using a local source unless you are having lots done or needing special materials (of which plate steel would not be).

Or buy a circle saw blade.

The blades aren't THAT sharp when not attached to an electrical implement of whirly destruction. And if it bothers you, you could cut off the tips.

Most blades are going to be case hardened though I think, so cutting it may require an acetylene torch.

Or a local welder might might want to make a quick cheap deal if you bring it to him. To cut and grind that is.

You'll need to get it cut at a workshop I sugest somewhere like Kcut in Lancaster they stock the materials and do water jet cutting plus will post the stuff to you or do it stupidly cheap if you can pick it up your self www.k-cut.co.uk

I've used them for various projects

4th company 3000pts
3rd Navy drop Command 3000pts air cavalry
117th tank company 5500pts
2000pts

That actually isn't that bad of an idea...normally the body of the blade is mild steel (hardened steel would shatter catastrophically if something like a 2x was bound on a table saw at speed...or if it caught a nail or other hidden metal bit). The teeth are hardened and now, generally a carbide alloy that is brazed on.

Cheap saw blade, take a vise grip to snap the carbide teeth off, I'd probably use a grinder to clean it up some on the edges, then you should have your round. Might even be able to get an old blade for free from a local construction firm. They resharpen them several times - but eventually the carbide is ground down so much that there is nothing left to sharpen.

What about a grinding disc, rather than a saw blade? If you get the right grade of grinder it will be pre-based with gravel

You could also coat the underside with epoxy to smooth the surface down and prevent scratching your table.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. In the end I went for a rectangle as it's alot easier to get hold of, and got the rod welded on. Here we are - Her first flight!
