Trying to improve my painting skills. Decided to do it with IG sniper figure, as its cape is perfect for training layering. Here are the somehow-working-pictures.

First, the general look of the figure.

As you can see, hands failed badly. Is this due to white paint is too thick? In first picture, you can see on the shoulder how the drybrushing lighter tone works.

Face didn't go that well either, but it kinda works. Even though white is awful.

Receipt for the cape:
1. Steel Legion Drab
2. Reikland Fleshshade (normally I would have used Agrax, but decided to try this)
3. Tallarn Sand
4. Tallarn + Karak Stone 50/50
5. Karak Stone
6. A little bit drybrush, Terminatus Stone

I really want to improve my painting and I appreciate every single comment I get. I know it is not that good looking figure, so feedback is needed.

Are you thinning your paints? It looks like you put them on thick. You can pull that cloak up a few notches with some simple washes. It looks like you went a bit crazy trying to highlight things that you could have easily done without. The edges on the receiver of the rifle, for example. If you ARE going to highlight the edges you need a much thinner brush stroke. You shouldn't really be able to see a solid line, you want it to look almost like a fade to a lighter color. Use less paint and a tiny brush. As far as skin, there's many ways to do it depending on what you're aiming for, but he looks AWFUL pale. Start with a nice solid flesh tone of your choice and then highlight from there. Also, that gun looks bent Also, work on staying in the lines before you try crazy highlighting and such. You can always go back years from now and touch the models up as you learn more.

I'll second what Munga has said above.
Also, have you tried painting cloth areas with several shades of wash instead of a solid base coat?

Try drybrushing too. You need hardly any paint at all on the brush but it really adds to the model.

Also, think about the dirt that this guy is going to pick up whilst crawling through the bush, and the chips he's going to sustain with his armour. A sponge is great for these. Again, you need hardly any paint at all.

His armour should look like the bases rim. All chipped and stuff. Washing definitely helps a shedload. Gives shading and brings out detail with the minimum of fuss.

Before painting anything more, I'd straighten that barrel.

I decided not to, as the the gun is curvy all the way from barrel to stock. I was afraid I would make it look more stupid trying to do that.

Thank you for the feedback. I do my best to better the model.
