I'll second what Munga has said above.
Also, have you tried painting cloth areas with several shades of wash instead of a solid base coat?

Try drybrushing too. You need hardly any paint at all on the brush but it really adds to the model.

Also, think about the dirt that this guy is going to pick up whilst crawling through the bush, and the chips he's going to sustain with his armour. A sponge is great for these. Again, you need hardly any paint at all.
