StarDrive is a 4X Action-Strategy game where the goal is to build a space empire.
Starting with a single planet and a small number of space-worthy vessels, you forge out into the galaxy, exploring new worlds, building new colonies, and discovering the StarDrive universe.
The heart of StarDrive is its ship design and combat engine.
StarDrive takes a module-based approach to ship design, allowing the player to create custom ship designs where the composition and placement of ship modules really matters to the performance of a ship in combat. In combat, if your portside armor is taking a beating, then rotate around and show them the starboard side! Hide behind a friendly capital ship's shields, warp into and out of the fray, launch fighters, lay mines, and so much more.
A top-down real-time 4x strategy game, similar to SoaSE but on a more massive scale. I must say, I'm quite enjoying it-- it has a few bugs and minor annoyances (it IS still in beta), but overall, I've found I rather enjoy it.

Equip, Reload. Do violence.
Watch for Gerry.
You cant change the exterior or look of the ships, but all the systems and internals, power, fuel cells, weapons, armor, sheilds , are on a grid overlay with the shape of the ship..its pretty cool.
You pick arcs of fire for some weapons, and even what fighters are launched from fighter bays (and you design the fighters too).
I had a lot of fun building stuff.

As did I. For an indy game in beta, it's very well done.
It is a bit hard though, unless you're really good at strategic play.

Sounds like everything I love, Only thing Sins was missing for me was the customization of Galactic Civilizations. Looks like this blends them nicely. Is it as big as Sins? Galaxy wise?

Use a box selection and then mouse over each of the green icons in the bottom left, it should give you the info for the one you are moused over unless I remember incorrectly.

Now this is very important- which Masters of Orion is it the spiritual successor to? If it is 1, then I'm all in, but I could pass on a spiritual successor to 3.

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleyways and mugs them for loose grammar.

There were only 2 Masters of Orion games.
Well, and a spreadsheet program themed on MoO I guess.
You're right though, I should have been more specific. This is the successor to MoO and MoO II. You have the Bul Kulrathi, a militant bear race. You have the "we are totally not the Darlocks" spy race, whose name sounds similar to Darlocks but I forget what it actually is...
nomotog wrote: Why always master of Orion? People have such small reference pools. I say it's closer to a real time space empires then master of Orion.
Mostly? Because Star Drive contains numerous almost-but-not-quite-direct references to Masters of Orion.
The Kulrathi in Star Drive? Direct reference to the Bulrathi in MoO.
The spy race in Star Drive? Almost direct reference to the Darlock in MoO.
The tech trees are very similar in setup, and the categories are direct analogues.
The Food/Industry/Research setup per colony is the same setup that MoO used.
The race customiser is pretty much the same as MoO, including many of the same actual benefits/drawbacks that you saw in the MoO series.

(Also I have never played Space Empires.)
It's just that a lot of games have been made after MOO and the things you listed are more staples of the genre then moo exclusives.

Speeding up production of ships that you want RIGHT NAO is my big use for income.
But yeah that and spies is about the only thing it's useful for to my knowledge. Can't even trade it with diplomacy, annoyingly enough.

I love 4EX games, but I think I'll avoid this. It just seems rather... I don't know. I want something like the old AoE or Civilization. This just seems too vapid. I know there's the whole space thing, but I just prefer an actual world and environment, rather than the emptiness of space. Maybe if they made it kind of like the Space Stage in Spore...

I thought that just used stored production, not income (?)
Both. Yo uspend credits equal to the amount of stored production you rush.

You complain about vapidity after mentioning Age of Empires?

That's one of the systemic problems with space games. Space is well space. It's big and there is nothing in it. This makes the maps kind of boring. Nowhere near as nice as the maps you get when your set on a planet. There are no space mountains, no space rivers, or anything.
