So the wording in MSS came up today at a game.

"..randomly select a non-vehicle enemy model.."

The gentleman I played against argued that I don't get to choose what model gets MSS effect. He said that its the word randomly made me roll to see who the MSS effect.

So rolled off for the rule and game went on.

So was he correct on his interpretation?

If you choose, then it's not random.

Randomly select.

This seems pretty cut and dry to me. You roll to see who is targeted. I don't see anything unclear.

while its true that the MSS affects a random model in base contact, 2 characters in a challenge are considered to be in base contact ONLY with each other.

So go ahead and challenge their squad leader or HQ and either they decline the challenge and cant attack, or they get singled out with the MSS.

Unless the non-necron player asasulted (or it is their turn) in which case, as oth resolve at the same time you can choose MSS to happen first, THEN you challenge

Scenarios:
1. Necron Lord w/ MSS is in b2bwith many enemy models. No challenges. MSS goes off on a random model in b2b.

2. Necron player assaults. Necron player decides if MSS goes off before challenges (and thus targets a random model in b2b) or if MSS goes off after challenges (and thus targets only the character in the challenge, as challenges are considered to be in b2b only with each other).

3. Opponent assaults. Opponent decides if MSS goes off before challenges (and thus targets a random model in b2b) or if MSS goes off after challenges (see scenario 2).
