hello,
i like to be as wysiwyg as i can most of the time mainly to avoid confusion but also to avoid having to explain things like proxie special weapons which draws attention to them. my question however is more about avoiding problems at formal games.
im in the process of building up some IG conscripts and figured it might look good to arm only half of the men with lasguns while the other half only hold a clip of ammunition. its a reference to that scene at enemy of the gates and complements the fluff of white shields nicely. I rarely game in stores or comps but do on occasion and have had things that look pretty cool forcibly removed from the table in the past, an awkward situation ild like to avoid in the future. So would a conscript model without a lasgun wind up adulating the analy retentive?

I would not have an issue with it.

Actually that would be pretty cool. Kudos for the good idea.

Conscripts are the rule of cool models of the IG, nearly anything goes as long as it looks good. (plus they have no gear options so every model is the same)

Yeah I wouldn't see that as a problem. I think it is a nice fresh idea actually.

If they say otherwise, choke them with your codex. I've read about players not letting their opponents use grenades (or other things like that) because their IG/SM don't specifically have them on their model despite their codex entry.

If you face a guy like that, just pack up your stuff and go. They're not worth your time.

Nobody cares. A guardsman that isn't a sergeant or carrying a heavy/special weapon is just a wound counter, and everyone knows that they have a lasgun and flak armor. It doesn't matter what the model is carrying as long as it's clear that they are not one of the three types of models that matters.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I agree 100%. I try to avoid people like that at all costs, they make the game not fun. While i try to get WYSIWYG if i can, im not going to go blow a paycheck if ive already got the models for it. Besides, you cant ever be flexible or try new things with that mentality. And most importantly, rule of cool wins any day unless its stupidly big or stupidly small models for advantage. If people are forcibly removing models from the table because it makes them sad, then youre already not having fun and that would be the whole point of our financially reckless and time consuming hobby!

I have an IG army that is pretty much brimming over with proxy weapons. I have used this army for years and even in Rogue Trader tourneys when GW used to sponsor them. I have never had any models disallowed and very rarely has anyone complained about the unconventional models. The theme is an undead traitor army with a lot of troops and gear scavenged from the battlefield.

For example here are some dark eldar that have been reanimated. It is not hard to tell who has a lasgun and who has a heavy weapon. I have now 60mm bases for the HW teams. When I started this army it was before IG HW teams were mounted on big bases.

Here is an example of a scratchbuild for special weapons that I use and no one has ever objected to them in tournaments or casual play.

Oddly enough I did have someone object to these Missile Launcher models. The thing is, these ML are honest to god IG/SM missile launchers and the TO told my opponent not to bother him with silly objections.

Two of these troops have boltguns from the beaky sprue but no one has ever complained about them representing lasguns.

I suppose how people react is always going to be unpredictable but as long as you are not modeling for advantage and there can be no confusion over what is represented, reasonable people are not going to object. I expect some day that perhaps one or more models could be disallowed in a tournament but if that happens I will just deal with it at the time.
