Is anyone out there playing Storm of Magic? I've picked it up, and some of the monsters are really cool. So much so that I picked up Forge World's Monstrous Arcanum, which has some (yeah, really expensive) very interesting monsters.
And I was very surprised to see that there isn't a thread about it here on Dakkadakka. No discussion, no articles. Is anyone playng Storm of Magic? Has anyone else bought Monstrous Arcanum?

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

No thread lasts for ever, which is why there aren't any Storm of Magic threads around. I'm fairly sure there will have been plenty at the time but none have, unsurprisingly, survived until now. Don't go resurrecting any though, that would be against forum rules
Personally, I'm a massive fan of Storm of Magic and I love to hurl insanely powerful spells and monsters around and just have a laugh and a fairly competitive game at the same time. It's brilliant when all of us at my FLGS store get together for a massive game. I haven't brought Monstrous Arcanum because, well, everything in there's so damn expensive, I don't think I'd ever get anything. One of the guys at said store has just bought a Great Fire Dragon though, so that should be interesting in our next SoM game in about a month's time. Sadly, I have only a Black Dragon, an Aracknarok Spider and a Manticore to call my own. I'm probably richer than him though.
I think the issue, if any, that people have with Storm of Magic is the silly win conditions, i.e. whoever occupies the most fulcrums wins. Now, objective games are fine under normal circumstances, but normally to seize an objective, you'd have to wipe out or rout a unit. In SoM all it takes is a simple cantrip. If you play SoM by the book and play to win, it's an all out very fun game or do the most damge up until the last turn where it's "whoever rolls best on their cantrips wins". However, I find that simple house rules are enough to get rid of this. We use VPs, with the Fulcrums counting as extra VPs, the amount depending on the size of the game. We also have double VPs for Wizards. Thanks to the latter rule and the whole Prescence/Equilibrium/Dominance shenanigans, the Fulcrums are still an important focus, but not the only one.

I really like Storm of Magic. It was a lot of fun. I haven't played it in a while, but I just bought a Carmine Dragon, a Magma Dragon, and the Fimir from Forgeworld so I can play it.
I too bough Monstrous Arcanum, because I had previously bought Tamurkhan and the quality of those too books is just amazing.

No one around here plays storm of magic. It seems like a bad idea to take the worst part of the edition, the magic phase, and add 25% more fail to the game.

We play it occasionally, In fact 5 friends and I just played a 3 a side 18,000 pt Battle. The real problem with storm of magic is you need a Fair amount of time to play it and usually people enjoy a faster game.

I reject SoM for it focusing on 8ths biggest downfall aka magic, I was (and am still) hoping for a add-on that focuses on tactics and not dice rolling skills. I'd even pay for it.

Storm of magic is insanely fun!! It was my empire with my friend playing lizardmen against beastmen and orcs. The doombull cast a spell that let him fly we decided not to dispell it he flew behind 20-30temple gaurd with a slann and brutally murdered them all. The orcs brought the idel of gork. It went insane and had to attack the nearest unit. It destroyed nearly everything. It was one of the best games I've ever played Automatically Appended Next Post: People say they don't play it cos it isn't competitive by focusing on magic but to them I say play for fun

This. I'd never enter a serious Storm of Magic tournament, mainly because of the annoying objective rules and the increased and very potent randomness. However, it is fantastic for just getting together with a bunch of mates or your gaming group, plonking loads of stuff on the table and just having a laugh!

I just want to point out that playing competitive and playing for fun aren't mutually exclusive. Competitive players play for fun as well. I usually play competitive because it's fun to me. People who play Storm of Magic play for fun as well, they just do not play competitive.

This.
It's mostly what made my gaming group give up WHFB and move to Malifaux.
(That, and all of GW's asinine moves in the last few years).

I've got the book and a few beasties, as well as the FW book.
SoM gets played regularly out this way, but for me(having not played it yet) I'm only interested in using the monsters, not the new magic setup.
So really any games for me would just be a regular game +X points worth of monsters.

I have played a few seige games in past editions but seige rules never really caught on even when GW threw a lot of support to it with the excellent plastic fortress kit, seige tower and other metal accessories. I will say that tactically it is not all that complex though.
The thing about GW add ons to both whfb and wh40k is that they are very rarely successful and just not adopted by the player community. The cityfight is an example of great rules supported by fantastic terrain kits that never caught on.
In whfb, big monsters have historically cost too many points for their effectiveness (dragons, giant, cygor, gorgon). Or they are stupidly broken like the hydra and abomination. When storm of magic was promoted as a way to have more big monsters and more magic, my reaction was, lol, good job make another expansion doomed to fail because that is the fate of every expansion so far but this time make it about two things we know GW never gets right, monsters and magic.

I regularly compare GW to Michael Bay films these days and Storm of Magic kind of nails the point for me.
That's not to say that you can't get enjoyment from it (who doesn't like The Rock?) but no, I wouldn't play it regularly for the same reason I don't eat at McDonalds every day.

I find storm of magic fun to change things up time to time. See other monsters/units on the table. I never get to play it as much as I would like.
