Subject: Newbie questions on units & generals!

Hi everyone!
I'm hoping to take part in the Armies on Parade competition at my local GW shop (and perhaps even at GamesDay if I make it that far!), but I am very confused on the rules. Perhaps some veterans could help?
The rules say I need at least 2 units and a general. I play WM/H, so I feel like a "unit" is a group of identical soldiers (i.e. 5 terminators, or 10 ork boyz, or 3 river trolls, etc). However, I did some research and it looks like vehicles can be considered units, too? So, does that mean I could have a general, 1 dreadnought and 1 rhino and that would be fit with these rules? And, if I'm planning to bring a unit of terminators, for example, do they go together in a specific number of models? Like, 5 terminators is a unit, or 10 terminators is a unit, etc etc?
Also ... what's a general?! I've heard people talk about SM sergeants -- is that the same thing as a general?
Thanks guys, in advance!
Andrew

Armies on parade doesn't care about rules-legal armies. Forget about the specific rules and look at the fluff concepts. So, you need:
1) A general: some kind of leader model that could plausibly be in charge of your army. Captain + command squad, a special character, etc. This is the leader of an army, a sergeant is just a leader of a single unit.
2) Two units: just what it says. Units are a group of infantry (including their sergeant any any upgrade models), a vehicle, another character, etc. Ten terminators would either be one unit or two, depending on whether they're arranged on the board in one group or two.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

It is not like WM/H. It has to be Troops. It seems you are speaking of SM. So space marines have Two troop, Tacticals and scouts. You HAVE to take 2 of those(Either two tacticals, two scouts, or a mix
And no, a sergeant is not a general, It is like a a bumped up version of the tactical.
A General(or as we call it "Warlord" or "HQ") is your armies lead. Like an SM captain. One HQ must be taken and there must be nominated for the Warlord(gives your buffs and your opponent gets a point if he kills him)

OK, it probably depends on what Codex you have. But for reference, a general is from the HQ slot of the Force Org Chart. A unit can be a vehicle, a unit of terminators, or anything else. For example, lets use Codex CSM.
Examples of Units
-Typhus
-Helldrake
-2 Mutilators
-15 Cultists
-1 Land Raider
etc.
Hope this helps

No it doesn't. OP is talking about a painting competition, not a game, and the rules for the competition specifically say that you don't need to have a rules-legal army.

Thank you guys! This does help a lot. I have to pick an army first, I suppose! But I guess if I pick someone off the "HQ" section of the GW website, that should probably count as a general?
Thanks!
