Dark Angels Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

I'm relatively new to the hobby, but when I took a trip to the UK recently I couldn't help but stop by GW HQ. I picked up a ton of stuff that was constantly sold out at the FLGSs in my area. I had seen the Forge World doors for the Dark Angels Rhino/Razorback online, and wanted to grab those as well. They were out of stock there, but put in an order and gave me free shipping. Just over three weeks later, they arrived, and I was stoked to finally get my Razorback together and on the battlefield.

The detail on the front of the doors is excellent, barring a few tiny bubbles that were not difficult to fix. However, the back side of the doors, where the textured track runs down, was totally filled in with resin. You can kind of see the diamond pattern of the tread, but it all smoothed over and bubbly. It's also slightly recessed, so trying to carve out the top to see if it's alright underneath isn't really an option. Ideally, I had hoped to hinge the doors to make them open and close for loading and disembarking, but the open doors look a bit gak. I know that I could probably just call them up or email them and they'd replace them, but I'd rather not wait any longer to get that vehicle on the board, so I'm just gluing the doors in place. It still looks cool, just not quite as cool

I'm just wondering how often these kinds of miscasts occur with FW products, since this was my first. I've not had any issues with standard GW models, and only some minor issues with finecast. Any stories to share?

FW models while great can come with minor casting problems though I can't remember getting any miscasts for quite a while.

To be honest it probably isn't worth thinking about, contact FW/GW and let them know the problem they will send out replacement parts quickly and with few questions.

While there are reasons to criticise FW and GW one are where they are always top notch is customer service. A quick call (or email since you are abroad) to them should see the matter resolved with out any need for you to start carving etc.

The older the kit, the more likely there is to be a miscast. That and FW have terrible QA and don't let their kits cure for long enough.

I bought some MkIII armour not long ago,

every single leg has miss cast, in fact the worst miss cast on any model i have seen. Like the resin hasn’t even filled the mould thus missing massive chunks off the legs. Now these 5 are being used as test models for my emperors children so i am not particular bothered and impatient to get things cracking on so i am not fussed.

FW are notorious for miscasts. For some bizarre reason they prefer to skip quality control entirely and just replace everything you complain about. This can be really frustrating, but if you call them and tell them the parts that are miscast they'll ship you new ones.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Pretty much this, though I have found some of the new kits can have miscasts or severe warping. This includes, but is not limited to, the Storm Eagle.

I am expecting my first FW models sometime this week, after ordering them at Salute. My brother has had a few things from them and has nothing but praise for the quality of the mini's delivered.

Looking forward to seeing them in the flesh though...

I wrote a lengthy letter detailing all the stuff ups i've had which is about 50/50 good/bad on all my FW orders. Hell, one Phantom Titan didn't even have the large bag on it with the batch number and was missing most of the Torso components... had to wait an extra month just for parts.

To date (from memory), i've had the following stuff ups;

Phantom Titan - Missing torso pieces and miscast bits (no large bag with batch number)

Phoenix Bomber 1 - Fuselage miscast

Phoenix Bomber 2 - Components bag missing (replacement included new fuselage which had broken off piece missing as well)

Nightwing Interceptor - Underside shrunken

Scorpion MK1 - Missing parts, one engine larger than other (stuck out 2mm at rear - to this day it's not fixed...)

Avatar - Miscast twice - bubbles/slipped mold (took 3 attempts before getting all parts right)

Corsairs - Jetpacks miscast - half of packs missing jets on one side

Squiggoth - Billing error - Credit Card statement needed to prove purchase (this happens a fair bit i'm told)

FW does have some QA issues; I've only ordered a few things from them, and some have been flawless (Chimera Autocannon Turrets,) and some have had minor issues (Leman Russ conversions, the occassional tiny bubble, one alignment issue that was fixed with some filing) but I haven't experienced anything major myself.

As has been said, however, they do have excellent customer service; the few issues I've broached with them have been responded to quickly and effeciently by people with authority to do something, not a customer service lackey. If you've got any big failures, just let them know, they've got a good track record on fixing problems.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.
