The question that came up during a game last night was does the Lance weapon type reduce a Bastion's AV 14 down to AV 12 per the lance rules.

My opponent said no.

Myself being the Dark Eldar player was of the opinion it should work.

Lance (pg 39) says the Lance special rule count vehicle Armour value higher than 12 as 12.

I know, a Bastion is not a vehicle right?

Pg 92 of the Rulebook states in bold letters "The main difference between buildings and actual vehicles is that they can't move, and units from either side can go inside."

Move on to Pg. 93 under Attacking Buildings and again in bold letters "Units may shoot at or charge occupied building just as if it was a vehicle."

These two lines in bold suggest that if you are shooting at an occupied building it should be treated as a vehicle for purposes of damage and special rules. Pg. 93 supports this view.

Has anybody ran into this problem and if so what is your opinion?

If a Bastion is shot at just as if it were a vehicle, then all rules that affect the AV or penetration roll (e.g. Melta) would also affect a Bastion.

Which is the purpose of this post. Do weapon special rules apply to building AV?

When shooting at an occupied building, you treat it 'just as if it were a vehicle.' I see no reason that special rules affecting vehicle AV wouldn't also affect building AV.

Just to stir the pot is there anybody who thinks buildings shouldn't be subject to weapon special rules? If so why exactly?

It's easier to assume that if something is treated "exactly like" something else, it follows all the rules regarding that something else. In the case of buildings, if you do NOT treat it as a vehicle for all purposes, a number of other problems occur.

Right behind you...

The rules tell you to shoot at it just as if it were a vehicle... Do exactly that and you shouldn't have any problems... So, to answer your specific question, yes, it seems the lance weapon would reduce the AV14 down to AV12 (barring any other house rule or other special rule you haven't mentioned in your scenario).

I've never run into anyone claiming a DE Dark lance didn't reduce a bastions AV to 12.

Was the bastion occupied inside? If yes then armor 12 with a lance. If no then you can't shoot or attack it. That's why you do not occupy the inside of a bastion it saves these arguments.

If you are shooting at a building, you treat it as a vehicle in all respects. Except it uses its own special damage chart.

And you can't shoot at an unoccupied building.

People who are donkey-caves.

Because they are donkey-caves.

A bastion is treated just like a vehicle.
