Hi guys I managed to take some pictures of the new box set Wyrd game Puppet Wars: Unstitched.

So this game has 44 minis in 4 plastic sprues but only 2 different sprues overall since one is repeated 3 times... the scale of the miniatures also changed and they are now quite bigger as you can see the plastic version pic VS the painted metals.

Plastic detail was great.

I have been covering more salute stuff on my blog but this game does have a special spot in my coverage because I always imagined this as the biggest contender of Super Dungeons explore awesome game... somehow I think this box offers a less value than SDE or its expansions... there are a lot less unique miniatures in this one.

Thanks for the great pics. I've been eagerly awaiting this one.

I will say though that aside from both containing miniatures there is no overlap game play wise between this and SDE. This is a fast competitive game with teams of puppets per player. The team building is quite strategic as lots of synergies can be set up between puppets. The reason for multiple puppets is because you can field multiple of the same puppet on one team, so I guess that makes sense. I'm also expecting this to be cheaper than SDE but there are no UK retailers yet (unless you were lucky enogh to get one at Saulte where i think it was 45 quid).

How differently does Puppet Wars play compared to Malifaux?

Isn't this just the plastic version of Puppet Wars that they released a few years ago??
I know how much of a pain that the small metal minis where so this a good step in the right direction

Too many models to paint - so little time

@Void_Walker - I read in the Wyrd Chronicles E-Magazine that they re-evaluated and improved upon the ruleset as well. Apparently, they didn't like how the original version worked in hindsight.

Personally, I'm a little torn. I bought a lot of the original run and could not find anyone really interested in playing. I'd have to be really impressed by the new offering, and get some friends that will try it out, before diving in for another shot at this game.

I hate that I supported this originally, even though I loved the look and game. This just feels like a kick in the teeth to original adopters that spent a lot of money on a product that promised support.

I won't buy the game I already supported again and it makes me very wary of future practices that Wyrd might engage in.

I would suggest emailing Wyrd directly about this. I would suggest it, but I've already seen a comment from a Wyrd employee declaring that there would be no way for people who bought the original set to get the new rules. Which kind of sucks, especially since that means there won't be a way to turn in like our Malifaux Rules Manual or the 1.5 rules for the new books.

Note: I was never expecting to, but the Rules Manual becomes effectively worthless since it doesn't contain fluff :-\

Wyrd doesn't care. I talked to an employee about this product last year. Asking if it was going to be optional or an expansion pack. I was rudely informed that, "No, it's a reissue with new rules and plastic miniatures" and "sorry if you feel your money was wasted but you can always buy the new version to keep playing it." Or something to that effect, to be fair I was kind of angry after the condescending tone started.

Don't they usually put their rules up as .pdf files anyway?

Thanks for posting the pics! Was there a previous version of this? I feel like my store has one sitting on the shelf, but when I picked it up it felt / sounded like there was metal in it, not plastic...

Yes, the one currently on the shelves is the original with, indeed, metal models not plastic. This one will be released sometime soon.

No, they only put the Rules Manual up online and the v2 stat cards because they had no real way of distributing those without issue. Say you buy the Malifaux v1 Rules when it was released, lots of errata, clarifications, and faqs later you have something that "different" than the originally released book. New players might have no problem buying the Rules Manual, but older vets that had been playing for a while might (idk why, the Rules Manual is 15 bucks). The other problem is that the v2 statcards weren't being released in the Rules Manual, so they had to come up with a way to get the updated model rules to the players. All of this was taken care of last year with the release of Malifaux 1.5. But again there wasn't much "need" to take the rules manual pdf or the v2 statcards down, since you still had people that might just want the rules and would only need the v2 statcards if they accidentally bought an old box (or pre-Chompy FAQ).

I also don't foresee them putting the M2E rules up online once the public beta test is finished.

The old box has metal miniatures, but still requires you to buy the pawn booster boxes (85 for the game, and 32 for each of the 3 pawn boosters). The new plastic box apparently was available for release (because my flgs owner asked me if I wanted the game), but according to the GenCon 2013 announcement, it's going to be released there.

They're well within their right to do that as it is their product, the problem is that you're right, customers like you bought the $85 box and now you can't play it with the new rules because that would require you to buy another $75 box just to get rules...

Yes they can do whatever they want with their product. I can also keep my money. Because what's stopping them from changing to resin and releasing a changed rules for Unbound the third edition. Or just dropping support altogether. Between this and two Gencons of rudeness I just have little to no faith in Wyrd for anything anymore.

I think that's a little harsh, Mr.Church13. Given that the rules will be "available" as .pdf files even if Wyrd doesn't sanction it, this seems to be a bit of a tempest in a teapot - for this product at least.

I really don't have much of a problem buying M2E rulebook either since publishers have been doing this stuff way back in the TSR days with AD&D.

One good thing about this new edition of PP is that I might actually pick it up now that the figures are all plastic.

Agreed, but there is a difference with a "board game" and a tabletop game or RPG doing this. With 40k, M2E, Warmahordes, D&D, etc... all they have to do is release a new book or two. With this you have to literally buy a second copy of the game just so you can play with the models you already have.

but as a board game you don't HAVE to upgrade

just play with what you've got

even if you take a board game to the store you're playing your boardgame (v1.0, v2.0 or whatever)

If I remember correctly (and don't quote me as I've never played Puppet Wars beyond a quickie demo I got), but there were some serious issues with the rules (I do remember the call going out for a quiet playtest of the Unstitched rules), and now that people that already own the game can't get the new and updated rules.

Again, it's Wyrd's product and they can support it/release it however they wish to, I think that Church's issue is that he spent 85 on the first game, possibly another 96 on the boosters, and 11 or so for the deck? He's put in almost 200 dollars for a game he can't play with other people. Puppet Wars is a board game in that is all enclosed within the box, but it's also available to play as a table top game (in the broad sense, I know there was a Puppet Wars tournament at GenCon, and Bill from the Gamer's Lounge was running it). So there's this disconnect between the Puppet Wars that Church can play, and the Puppet Wars Breotan could play (if he picks up the game).

Ah, that info makes a difference

I guess if it's (officially) on the competitive circuit they probably should make the new rules available

or at the very least put up a conversion document (that you'd need the old rules to use)

Yes but the error in this is if I want any future expansion packs or more models. I do have to buy the new version because new characters, rules, and cards will not function with V1 stuff.

This was really the only game from Wyrd that I enjoyed the look and gameplay of. Not saying there's anything wrong with Malifaux it's just not for me. But for them to just say "all your old stuff is invalid go buy our new set to get future expansions" just seems like they don't care about consumers at all. I know they're a business and all and they need to make money but at least GW is a big faceless giant that hates you and not someone you can look into the eyes of at a convention and have them roll their eyes and brush you off like your question of how can a first edition player make the new set work without dropping $80 is just the most idiotic and rude question ever.

Are the old models useful in any way with the new set? Like I said, there's an old set on the FLGS shelf so just curious . Perhaps as just alternate poses / sculpts?

I'd wait for somebody more in the know to confirm this but I have vague recollection of reading somewhere that the new plastics are somewhat larger than the old metals

I can't figure out where I've seen it and could be wrong

EDIT: Still not sure where, but I'm beginning to think it may have been from a podcasts Gencon Coverage maybe D6 Generation (? they certainly have connections to wyrd), Hitting on 3s (one I tend to try and catch) or maybe something else

I've heard that as well.
Also, I believe the new set comes with everything you'd want under the new rules.
The sculpts are different though so if you really want the old sculpts, try and get a discount on the old set - you know, about to be deprecated etc. Aside from that, I don't believe there's much of a reason to still get the old set from what I've heard...

So this is actually a board game? I figured it was a skirmish game along the lines of Wyrd's other products. If it's all self- contained I could envision myself picking a set up.

How much is that box of plastic going to run me once it's available in the wild?

Worst case with that many figures I'm sure I'll find some alternate uses for them somewhere if I'm not a fan of the rules.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Looking at the plastics, very similar to wargames factory sprues.

Well its RRP is $75/GBP50 so apply your regular discounters' discount on other wyrd items to that Wayland has it at GBP45, miniature market at $56,25 etc.
