So I picked up some of the chaos black spray paint. I've used it on a couple models now. The cultists came out PERFECT with it. but the terminators have come out... well... their eyeholes are practically gone. lol. filled in by the paint. Am I keeping the paint too close to the models? or just applying too much to them?

Ok. I'll try light sprays over a period of time, instead of trying to undercoat it all at once. lol

The big problem is that you're using Chaos Black spray, which is over-priced, unreliable gunk.

You're better off with a discount store tin of flat black spray, although if you prefer something actually designed for miniatures check out the Army Painter range of sprays... I haven't used them but they get good reviews.

I've thought of getting just some regular spray paint, I just wasn't sure how well it would work on the 40K models. So I figured better safe than sorry.

Def to close to the models. The best way to resolve your issue is to use an old tire and a 10 dollar airbrush. But to help you at hand. Best way to do it is by putting the model on a tip of a ruler. than holding the spray can at the other end of it so you get about 30CM away. Do in small burst don't hold it down.

hope this helped mate. good luck

I've had nothing but good results using ColorPlace (the $1/can Walmart brand) flat black (the white was passable, but slightly chalky - the black, though, is practically magic). Not resilient enough for metals, but it holds nicely to plastic. Goes on incredibly smooth and thin - if you don't douse the model so heavily as to cause visible pools and runs, you won't lose an ounce of detail. Even glossy, wet, "oh , did I overdo it?" coats usually shrink down to a cleaner finish than expected. If you have easy enough access to a Walmart, it's well worth dropping a buck (and change... darned sales tax) to try it out.

I never used the cheaper ones but as far as i know some are designed to fill gaps which is bad for miniatures. I think you need some that shrink while cureing to get the best results.

I have both used army painter colored primers and GW black primer. I have my share of oversprayed models. What worked best for me was to not spray directly at the models but move the can quickly over the model from one side to the other while spraying. But this is a big waste of primer so you better line your models up and spray many of them at once.

I actually like Krylon fusion. It is supposed to bond to metal and plastic. I have been using it for awhile. I use grey as its a nice middle ground for both dark and light colors. Its not pricey either. a couple of bucks for sure.

I know this wasn't part of your original question, but I just want you to know in case you don't already. You can salvage those terminators (the ones with the filled in eyeholes) by stripping the paint and starting over. Just search the P&M forum for "Paint Stripping" and you should get a lot of helpful information. When I first started out, I threw away a box of chaos marines that I just doused in spray paint. I just don't want anyone to make the same mistake.

If you already knew about that stuff, sorry, just trying to help out.

It crossed my mind to try that too. Thanks for the advice though. If I hadn't had made mistakes before then that would prolly have been my first instinct (I id to plague marines instead *facepalm*)

If you get the chance try to Krylon 'Camo' line. Up here in Canada its available at most hardware stores and Walmart.

I use the Camo Flat Black exclusively now over other companies, and the Khaki and Army green are lifesavers for painting Flames of War!
