I was just messing around with a chimera chasis and came around to slapping a Flakk 88 cannon ontop and came up with this.

Now I am kind of torn between locing the idea and hating it.

I think I am onto something with this though and wondered what you guys thought on what I could do to merge the two pieces together into maybe a tank hunter perhaps orrrr ?

Cheers

Well, you could easily make an alternate basilisk with that. Just a non open top version.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

It looks like you have slapped a field gun on top of an APC...

I think the only way of making it tie in is to significantly reduce the roof height of the passenger compartment and make it almost a half basilisk, so the 88 is peeking over the top of the driving compartment but the gun crew is still shielded to some extent by the tracks and side walls but the gun is not slung down low like a basilisk and only capable of being used as artillery but can be levelled and used for direct fire (much as the 88 would normally be used for anti-tank).

I do agree that it looks like I just slapped it on because that is what i essentially did However the inpiration was sparked from there
Now then that Idea is not bad at all the half basilisk with it just peaking over, make it look like the german Marder tank destroyer.

Sink the 88 a bit into the body of the Chimera...like MK said....thinking like a tank destroyer...might want to add some ballistic shields on either side of the 88 barrel..some thin wire looping around the rear on top...add a bit of camoflage...cloth camo...your onto something but it going to have a WWII german look to it lol

The first thing I saw was the difference in detail level. With the gun, you've got too realistic of a piece sitting on top of something unrealistic. Maybe adding more realistic details to the chassis and more GW style details to the gun would help tie it together.

Edit: just realized... The gun needs rivets, lots of rivets!

Personally, I think a Chimera is too small for the '88' even if situated in the troop compartment like a half-track. My first thought would to be to remove the AA/mobile mount and instead drop it fully down into the hull with the barrel mounted in a mantle on the glacis (sloped armour plate at the front). I would then lower the troop compartment down to 1/2 or 3/4 height. Overall this would get you a style similar to a Stug III of WW2 vintage. But that's just my personal take!

Alternatively, if you were to go with the above 'Assault Gun/SPG' style, then you could leave the troop compartment with the doors open to see the gun-crew inside. Sprinkle around some shells on a base behind it and you'd have a pretty epic mini diorama IMHO!

Anyway, that's just my take - good luck!

I would say use it as a Hydra. Remove the rear troop compartment and add a couple of guys to man the weapon. I would say no to adding a weapon shield. Using this as a Basilisk works too as say it was a local forge variant.

It looks like a GW Chimera with a Tamiya Flakk 88 stuck on top.....and not in a good way.

Really? A bike comes with this kit? I mean, if so, that's a surprising oversight from Tamiya, because it was my understanding that only a Sdkfz 8 half-track or a Sdkfz 251 was capable being a dedicated gun-tractor for the 88mm due to it's weight. I don't even think the kettenkrad bike would be capable of pulling it. That aside, if the gun is 28mm or 1/35, then I would presume the bike (If it is that) would also be 28mm or 1/35 scale, but it wouldn't be as chunky as a 40K bike.

Its kind of similar to a conversion I did a couple months ago. And yeah I do recommend lowering the hull and moving it back otherwise it looks clunky.

Self-Propelled Gun (SPG) conversion

Look at real world vehicles from WW2 such as the Marder, Nashorn and Bishop gun carriages.

Marder I

Nashorn

Bishop

As you can see they are pretty much a gun stuck on the top of a tank chassis with a sheet metal armour box put around the sides. In the case of the Nashorn, the gun is an 88mm Flak and it has been put in a kind of well at the rear of the hull. That would be easy to imitate with your model.

Cut the roof off the passenger compartment with a razor saw. Leave the rear wall and door intact.

Make a floor inside the compartment and put the flak gun on it. Make a front wall for the compartment. Build a shield around the front and sides of the open roof.

You can do all that pretty easily with 1mm plasticard, and detail it a bit with some extra plates, rivets and maybe some bits cut out of the old roof.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Some good ideas here guys thanks !

I do have the motor bike lying around somewhere if you would like a comparison shot at some point ?

I have canablized my broken Basilisk to use as a base for it and I shall take it from there ! You can check out my blog for updates on how it looks

Thanks for your ideas and pictures too

@ dionysus, Ohhh.... Haha I get it, I thought the bike you referenced was intended by Taimya to be the gun-tractor! Obviously it's just a messengers bike! Sorry, I mis-interpreted that there.

I was thinking more of a Stug type assault gun in my above post...
