This has been driving me quietly nuts for a few months now.

If you can identify the movie from my description, help me out here:

The American Movie is

1. Black and White. Set after WW2 possibly so early 50s.

2. It is a 'buddy film'.

3. It's two central characters are in the army.

4. One of the leads is a simple but popular and attractive guy, he is a subordinate rank (private?) to the senior guy (sgt?).

5. The senior guy is short and unattractive and acerbic, but has a good heart. The subordinate Private guy sets out to make his (sgt) life better.

6. The 'Private' then sets up the 'Sergeant' with a girl at a funfair. Sergeant guy is happy with girl but then finds out she was set up and gets mad.

And that's about all I can remember, I watched it as a kid and now cannot for the life of me remember what it was called or if I'm remembering all those bits correctly.

If it jogs anyone's mind, let me know.

Was it filmed in the 1950s, or more modern and just set in the 1950s?

Filmed in black and white era, it was 50s I think. Definitely not a modern film.

I take it that searching wikipedia's categories for it would be a bit of a long shot? I.e. there's a lot in there, and the film may not even have an article. I've spent ages searching through every listing in those things just to find books before. Going so far as to look up every film produced during the 50-60s may be a bit too far though... =/

Almost sounds like an episode of Gomer Pyle USMC.

This describes most post-WWII era films, of which there are a lot.

At first I thought maybe it was 'No Time For Sergeants', but it has been so long that I can't recall much beyond it having Andy Griffith (pre-Andy-Griffith show) and Don Knotts.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Is it one of the Sgt Bilko films?

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Well done sir, that was not correct but led me to take a look on youtube and it jogged two things from my brain, it was Steve Mcqueen in the 'simple private' role and it was later than ww2, peacetime.

So I finally found it.

It was called

'Soldier in the Rain'.

Great, now to watch it again.

It looks clean, suspiciously clean. I'd party in a bathroom that clean. CLEAN!

Especially with the lady that's churning the butter.
