Subject: Dwarfs good for a first time player?

Hello, as the topic stated I was thinking of starting to play fantasy, I already play 40k, and I've always wanted to play the dwarfs. Are they an easy army to learn/play? From some of the BR's Iv'e seen they seem like necrons to me, tough, little to no magic, and great for ranged combat.
Also I wouldn't want to start an army and have it updated soon, so will it be updated soon and I should wait till then?

I don't think Dwarves will be updated any time soon, and, Dwarves are a very solid and easy army to play (though they are in need of a revamp). They have cheap artillery, great armour, excellent anti-magic abilities and absolutely awesome ranged! What's there not to like? Automatically Appended Next Post: And, they have some pretty awesome looking models, and have units that can hold their own in close combat! Trust me, they're a devious opponent, and tough to beat.. My Dark Elves have fallen many-a-time to the foul clutches of my friend's Dwarves..

Honestly, I think dwarves are a the most boring of all armies to play and play against. They dont do anything in the magic phase and their movement phase is limited to nonexistent depending on build.
Lizards are next, for revision, after that it is uncertain but could indeed be dwarves.

They dispel in their magic phase.
Forgetting that is a recipe for failure.

I have a friend that got a dwarf army for cheap. He was mad stoked for it, assuring me he wouldn't deviate to artillery and such for support and could make lists using tons of infantry. After a couple of games, I think he is reconsidering how "weak" his beastmen are.
I don't want to deter a new player from their army of choice, but to be fair they are not Necrons, as their infantry is actually fairly poor compared to other armies either due to cost or their rather unimpressive statline. The artillery really is the saving grace, but only in higher point games can you bring to bear any real threatening firepower.

Dwarf warriors are point for point one of the best core in the game, heavy armour as standard and a cheap upgrade for great weapons, due to i2 you will almost always be going last anyway so great weapons are usually a must, t4 and ld 9 as standard, dwarf core us excellent, also add in thunderers and quarelers, longbeards, rangers, yep dwarf core is just fine

I kind of agree that Dwarfs are a bit dull. Mostly cuz they are an old book. The new 8th books typically add a lot of new units or make old ones more viable.
But when it comes to WHFB, because the hobby is so expensive, I say go with what you will like. It's a lot harder to try 7 different armies and see which you enjoy most, without robbing a bank to fund your hobby. If you can, go to a GW store and see if you can play with some of their armies on display. Or toadie up with some players or just watch some games. Nothing worse than spending hundreds of dollars and getting something you ultimately don't like. Kind of like me and this silk dress I bought :(

Thanks for all the comments, I'm still in the debate phase as to whether or not to start WHFB, but lets just say I'm REALLY interested. I guess I'll just have to watch some more battle reports and see who looks like more fun to play.

Some of the best battle reports are on youtube by oncebitten360. He is a very smart player and his reports are excellent.

I would say that Dwarfs are a good starting army! They are the pure essence of badassery, though they have not been redone in a time, that does give them some advantages. They do really need an update and I find it rather interesting and possibly a foreshadow that a Dwarf specific item would be included within the new HE book.
Anyways, they have some of the best Core and Special infantry in the game as well as of course the best war machines. Also your enemy can forget about their magic phase because it wont exist against Dwarfs. Many people say they are boring to play and play against, but there are many different armies that can be done if you really put your mind and skill to it, and they can make the game much more interesting. Personally I don't find them boring at all, there isn't many things better than watching the helpless enemies scramble across the battlefield being blown to pieces by cannons, only to smash into the unrelenting wall of armour and muscle to be smashed aside!
