Not bad.. I think if you gave him a dirty wash his details would pop so much more..

I agree A bit of a dirty wash would really take the colours used and give them something more for a relatively easy extra but i really like the use of the golden colour for the metal work, really makes me think of the bioshock series (wonder whats in my xbox drive....).

Its got that brass steampowered style something I might do with my orks come to think of it!

Yeah, both his skin and pistol are the things I see that really need a wash. That pistol with the "red" slits shows how much it needs a wash. Oh, and drill that thing! Guns need their barrels drilled!

Besides that: love it He looks like a proper warboss and the color choice looks pretty good. I just don't like the blue metal bits on the "banner".

Echoing the above; good paint job but needs some washes to really make it pop.

@solarshock
I used bronze actually.

@everyone else
A wash? I'll see what I can do. I'm still new to this

I like then, but the armor looks a bit too bland. The details don't have shadows and being Orks, they could use a dirtier armor. You could try using Agrax Earthshade to make it look nicer Oh, and their skin could use a shade aswell, dunno if it should be Biel-Tan green or Nuln Oil.

Drilling the hole in those weapons would be great aswell.

I don't have a drill that'll work for that purpose. Also I tried dirtying the armor on a boy, and I HATED the way it looked. I don't know what other people think but I REALLY HATED IT. It looked terrible, and I just couldn't stand it. So no dirtying of the model. Sorry.

I understand. It's your models, so if you want them all shiny and new looking, hey, it's your decision! My necrons also look spankin' new because I don't like combat damage and rust on them.

But maybe I didn't explain it all: What I mean is adding Agrax Earthshade on those specific details on the armor. Not an overal wash. Another possibility is adding an overall wash and then painting back up the colors you want shiny. I do this with cloaks: paint it in the base color, shade it with the Carriburn Crimson (? something like this) and then I start highlighting it back up.

Well, keep up the good work

I agree. thats the exact technique I use. I apply the base colour, give it a nuln-oil wash (or beil-tan for ork skin), let it dry and do another layer of the base colour leaving out the areas that have darkened from the oil. Also, if you could try watering down the oil slightly thinner if you didnt like the effect it had. Or you could only apply the wash to the areas that should be darker. The only reason I state this is because I think the colours look a little solid at the moment. Perhaps you could link us an idea of what you want the boys to look like? perhaps a level of painting you are currently aiming for?

But all in all. I LOVE bad moons nobs. In fact I love the Bad moons yellow colour in general. I think on orks it really makes them stand out im trying to resist the urge to paint all my orks as bad moons, as mines supposed to be a mixed army! I have a link for you though. Please take a look and tell us what you think. I personally think its a very fast technique and the article shows how easily it is to add a slightly higher level of detail without spending hours.

They're not bad at all, but I'd echo what everyone else has said. A bit of shading makes a massive difference.
Some of the orks I've painted look shiny and new, but they're still shaded.

Good start, like others have said, shade/highlights to take the next "step"

Agrax earthshade on metal bits, and leather/dirty clothes/teeth/eyes (can also use it on your skin, and then re highlight your skin with green... or use a thraka green wash + re highlighting green if you don't want them looking dirty)

and use seraphim sepia for that yellow armor... sepia wash on yellow armor is just... well... pretty! Try it out on a test model. I doubt you'll dislike it!

OK another thing, I'll TRY to do some shading. Not sure how good I'll be at it. Also, I don't use expensive paints.
I get stuff from Craft stores. I make my washes. So I'll see what I can do. Also, Mojo1Jojo: Why?

I also mainly use cheap apple barrel brand paint from wal mart.

I still use citadel washes, they are pretty good quality IMO.

Agrax does become a bit more "Red" than I like as it becomes empty though.

The sepia wash, whatever recipe they have, I like. I'm sure you can find some good recipes online." Awesome paintjob " has tutorials for it I think.

Look up painting orcs using mainly washes/only washes.. You can achieve green skin by using green wash over white primer, and it shades itself alot (especially if you shade miniature with a black wash/white dry brush or something similiar) .. I think that is why he says not to prime black. it takes more time to cover up black with green than covering white.

if your orcs will have lots of black armor, etc, black may still be fine choice. I spray my orcks black. Im lazy and leave a "black line" between where colors meet, and the black primer provides that.. it takes a bit exta time to get coverage on bright stuff but makes the dark tones of the model mo' dark if you ask me... So IMHO its really not a "never prime black" as to, "don't have a pre conceived go to primer. base it on what the end result of model you'd like to achieve/what will save some time" ... for instance if painting skeletons, you could prime them a bone color, then just paint the metal and wood bits, and wash/dip the whole model in miwax polyshades (a cheap alternative for army painter dips)

hope this helps!

If you're against giving them a dirty wash have you thought about back lining? That would give you the look of depth without making them grubby.

i dont want to be critical but am i missing something?

please beleive me i mean this with lots of love as i remember starting in this hobby and i havent got any epic skills just average at best and i HATE critisising other peoples work so im sorry in advance but here goes

the paint is thick (thin and paint in layers) with little detail picked out, the yellows have no coverage with the base colour showing through(again if base coating black then use a good coverage light colour before useing yellow as its about the hardest colour to make pop) . there seems to be a good bit of overpainting on the models (ie hand colours on axe handles). teeny tiny brushes and washes are an ESSENTIAL part of painting orks. and i find the longer i spend picking out the fine detail ( wireing, teef and damage) the better it comes out after the washes. i go through phasesof painting and giving up but picking up the techniques is essential. read as many of the tutorials as you can and play with different methods of doing things. i got super confused looking at this thread because i thought you were trolling as i looked through the galleries but after 20 mins of scratching my head i realised i was looking at skyfi's gallery!

please dont take my comments as im bashing you as im an ork painter as well and i think everypainter needs the love of a good greenskin. look through the tutes and galleries at what other people have done with the greens.

also remember what i said about the washes they add depth to the model.

@Kizmet.
1: I like your avatar
2: Thanks for the advice I actually decided to give washes to my important models (Anything except troops choices)

I'm actually going to move sorta. I'm starting a new thread in the dakka painting and modeling blogs, as my habit has be come this: Buy model. Paint model. Let model sit for week or 2. Decide model could look better. Improve models paint job.

This is the last thing I'm putting in this thread

Firstly I'm glad you took the comments as they were intended.

How long did you spend on the truck?

It looks good but on your models I see a lot of the flat black primer. In a few months you will look at all these and want to repaint or tidy up them so slow down on each model. I have a but load of stuff that needs retouching from my first attempts.

Here is a trukk of mine

Get a silver and dry brush some of the primeered bits and look into weathering or ageing
