Hi All,

I've been getting some requests to do a tutorial for my Bad Moons Scheme, so without further ado:

Bad Moons Speed Painting Guide

Purpose

This guide will teach hobbyists of an intermediate skill level to go from this:

to this:

in 14 steps.

Overview

Many people consider yellow to be the most difficult colour to work with due to the weak pigment found in most paints.

This guide will show the average painter how to paint a predominantly yellow colour scheme to a good tabletop quality in a quick and efficient way by eliminating many of the steps that are usually required.

Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills

This guide makes use of several basic techniques. Participant should be familiar with the following:

Priming

Highlighting

Washing

*Please note: I did not invent any of the techniques listed in this tutorial. They have been acquired over the years from various sources. This guide is a tool to show the process and procedure used to achieve the displayed results.

Basic Safety

Always prime in a well ventilated space and use protective equipment (goggles, gas mask)

Avoid ingesting any paints and/or contact with eyes.

Equipment and Tools

Brushes

Base coating/large scale washing: 1/4" wide brush

Small base coating and preliminary highlights: #3 standard brush

Edge highlights and small details: 2/0 fine detail brush

Primers

Krylon Matte White Indoor/Outdoor Primer

Army Painter Daemonic Yellow Primer

Paints*

GW:

Scab Red

Chaos Black

Denab Stone

Mithril Silver

P3:

Pig Iron

Khador Red

Menoth White

Coal Black

Underbelly Blue

Washes

GW:

Thrakka Green

Gryphone Sepia

Devlan Mud

P3:

Armor Wash

*These are just the paints that were chosen, of course any colours can be substituted to taste. Comparable paints from other ranges can be found here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

Water

Tap water will do for thinning paints and cleaning brushes.

Painting Steps

Priming

After priming white, base coat the entire model with a bright yellow. To save time I've used Army Painter Daemonic Yellow, though any bright yellow like Sunburst, Golden, Cyngar or Sulfiric yellow work.

Be sure to paint the entire model yellow, this will save several steps later on.

Skin

Wash the skin sections with Thrakka Green. After the first wash is fully dry apply a second coat.

Note: Washes take longer to dry than most paints. When working with any washes or inks always allow the last coat to fully dry before applying a second coat or painting any adjacent areas.

Yellow

1) Pick out all of the clothing and armor that will be yellow and wash with Gryphone Sepia.

2) Dab any pools of wash that are collecting with the brush while it is still wet to avoid pooling

Note: Apply liberally to save time at this point, all of the following colours can paint right over this coat.

Metals

1) Base coat all of the metal parts (weapon blades, armor plates, etc) with Pig Iron

2) Wash with a coat of Armor Wash ink thinned down 2:1 with water.

3) Highlight the edges of these parts with Mithril Silver.

Boots and Belts

1) Base coat all boots and belts with Chaos Black

2) Apply a coat of Coal Black leaving Chaos Black in the recesses

3) Highlight the edges with a 2:1 mix of Underbelly Blue and Coal Black

Teeth and Nails

1) Base coat with Denab Stone

2) Wash with Devlan Mud

Eyes

1) Using a fine detail brush carefully paint the eyes Scab Red

2) Dot the raised centers of the eyes with Khador Red

Thanks for reading!

C&C welcome.

Great tutorial More Dakka, I didn't realize that the skin on ur guys was a wash on yellow. They look like you spent the time highlighting. You yellow is incredible and so simple. Your next tutorial should be on the battle damage you do on you Kans.

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

This is an incredible tutorial. If one was to go 2 steps further and highlight the yellow with badmoons yellow, and highlight the green skin as well, what would be the best color? Would a scorpion green be too extreme of a color shift?

Yes, any bright yellow can be used to clean up the edges and provide further highlights. I would start with something darker than Badmoons (which is the brightest I think). Something like Sunburt yellow thinned down would be a good place to start (all the yellows need thinning to avoid that caked on look they tend towards).

For the skin I would highlight with Goblin green (do they still call it that? Could be Gretchin green now) and add either a bright yellow, or Bleached bone (or equivalent) depending on the effect you want (brighter comic book Orks vs more weathered Orks).

Glad you guys are finding this tutorial helpful. When I get some more time I'll do an advanced tutorial that covers additional highlighting and weathering/chipping for yellows.

That would be greatly appreciated if you did. the appeal of the tutorial is how a few steps are involved, but it would be nice to know which steps could be further taken to add a little more detail.

It could. I've had success with it on my walkers and MegaNobz.

It will look dirtier on a flat surface, which is OK for Imperial Fists since I've heard they don't wash their gear between campaigns.

Just make sure that the wash isn't pooling too much on the flat/raised surfaces and you should be fine. Any areas where you get pooling, you can just stipple with dark brown, and paint boltgun metal inside to make a chipped effect.

Well, now that I know how to paint yellow orks, i guess it's time to finally get off my butt and paint that freebooter unit I made a while back.

Conduct While Gaming
While rolling a die, do not say, “Anything but a 1!” unless you wish the die to come up as 1. Any other such attempts to anger the “Dice Gods” will result in the existential equivalent of continuously flipping a coin and having it come up heads every time (for reference, see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead). Your dice will be cursed to roll ones for everything other than morale checks, which will come up sixes.

ORK PLAYERS HAVE A LIMIT OF 1 SCREAMS OF WAAAAAAGH PER HOUR. violators will be forced to play tau.

Players with chimeras and las weapons shall pronounce chimera ki-mere-uh, not chim-ere-uh. Violators will be forced to play nothing but world eaters. Non-40k personnel must purchase and build a chimera.
