Morphing Obliterator

I’ve been working on my Red Corsairs for about over a year now. This is my first army and I have only about 900 pts painted (2100pts to go). I decided to post my finished models to keep me motivated. (I’m seeing red everywhere!)
Right now the only pics I have are of Huron. This was taken a year ago I have since then ‘updated his look. I will take pics of what I have done and take some of my finished works.
Then hopefully I’ll be able add some new stuff

Yep. I used green stuff and 3 skull bits.
I have re taken the photo and added close ups of his head
Mind you I played a few games with him and I've noticed a few chips. I'm kinda scared to coat them.

First off, welcome to Dakka.
Secondly, Red Corsairs, neat! Don't see nearly enough of those lads.
Thirdly, I'm loving it up to the face. The face just seems a bit too...blue. Dunno, you're model, you're descion, but it DOES look like he's got a bit of Hypothermia.

These were my first marines i painted (and also my favorite)
I think I'm too rough with my models. my Champion's arm fell off and I noticed after taking this picture that I lost his finger as well :(
These ones are my crazies! (I let my little sister put them together)
My heavy bolters:

I love the crazy on the right in the picture, looks like he's trying to squirm out of some attack coming from behind him. The painted fist on the interior almost looks orky since it's not a smooth coat and there is some black showing. But I'd imagine it'd be a pain to touch up now that it's assembled, and it probably isn't even noticable in person. I like your hilighting on the rhino though, any tips or tricks on how you did it?

Thanks for the comments guys.
I find red hard to pant smoothly (and white) thats why i kept the rhino black. But i have purchased an air brush a few months ago and have been using on my land raider (yes it will be red) and my second defiler. As soon as i finish them I'll post them. In the meantime I'm still taking pics of my old stuff

Love your Red Corsairs... great work! Keep motivated & keep it coming...
Very striking coloring and contrast between the red and black, and I really like the job you've done on the bases... they follow a theme but not all exactly the same.
I'm re-building my old Mantis Warriors army... if we ever wind up at the same place/time... we should definitely have a game. Both armies are rare and have an established rivalry... it would be a seriously fun event.

I running out of things to take pictures of
Next up is a defiler that i have mixed feeling about. I bought it on eBay for a good price w/ some other things. The description and the pictures all looked good. But when i received it, it was a mess! The defiler was broken in many places. the CC arm pins were completely broken off. The reaper autocannon was glued on backwards w/ the bullet magazines facing outward. Most of the blades were broken off and the claws were put together in odd position. on top of all that the glue that was used was the plastic glue so that the pieces were melted together
Well it took me a while to get it right. I had to re-pin the CC arm. Cut out the reaper autocannon and the claws very carefully and put it back together again
here is a pic
This is all I have painted so far. I have lots of plans and projects tho. Stay tuned!

Next up is my 2nd defiler. I had problems with this on too. I bought this one and another one(not built yet) for about $20 for both. He had done some heavy conversions to both. The body parts where the legs attach to was cut in half to make two 4 legged walking gun platform. Alot of the detail pieces like the the back of the top body cut into pieces(lucky for me he kept all the pieces and his cuts were very clean). So lets just say it took me a while to get Humpty Dumpty back together again (and alot of green stuff). Even if you were to look closely you wouldn't notice the difference
This model unlike that last one all the parts move or rotate. The Heavy flamer is magnetized to switch for the DCCW or a Havac Launcher(both of which are not completed)
Edit (fixed photos)

I'd suggest black wash on the red just to give it that WOW! factor also wash the horns devlan mud, i painted mine the same way (from GW stegadon ) and then when I used the wash I was stunned (in the good way)

Thanks Karvus, Washes were used and then highlighted. Right now I have most of my models clean. Once they have more battles I might add some grime and damage. tho I probably will do it to my first defiler. Right now I'm working on a captured SW rhino. I'm testing different weathering techniques on it like pigments. I've also painted the interior grey added SW decals then used the hairspray method. As soon as it is done I'll post them

Looks pretty good. Your free hand is excellent. A few critiques though:
On the terminators I noticed that the paint is a bit thick. Try thinning your paint a little more. As you know, Red is very hard to paint over black. Try undercoating the areas that will be red with a reddish brown, like vermin brown. Then paint thinned red over that.
Secondly, the highlighting needs some work. Try starting with some 75% Codex grey/ 25% Black and highlighting the edges of some of the black areas on your models.
Your shading on the other hand is quite good.

Thanks PainTraina that means alot, yes the paint is thick on the termies. I have since then bought an acrylic reducer. I love it. I still need practice using it tho. I'm finding it alot better to paint many thin layers then to fight the the black with a thick one or 2. Which I'm trying on my LR. I never been a fan of the codex grey/black look for highlight black. I tried it(very lightly) on my Rhino.I find it looks too grey. So for my LR(pics as soon as I finish) I've tried a different technique. I use a mix Hawk Turquoise and black and highlight until i get to 50%. Then i use a few coats Badab Black wash to darken. Its subtle and probably wont show on pics but I really like it. BTW do you have a link to your Traina Studios blog or site?

I'm pretty new to this and I've just started my red corsairs army...... I have only bought 1 pack of chaos space marines and im wondering what i should buy next. Your marines and terminators look AWESOME and i wanna know how you make the gold look so shiny. I have the old WD issue where it shows to how to paint red corsairs and how to paint the gold, I've used that method and find that the gold doesnt look like gold but more of an off bronze-gold. Any tips would really help me out and i would appreciate it heaps!!!

I like the army, and I bet it would look even better to get the new FW Luft Huron model! (I've never liked the one that GW made) But I am a bit confused on a point of fluff. After the Badab war did the Astral Claws switch to red armor? When I used to field Huron (Probably in 3rd ed?) the fluff said that Red Corsairs were mostly made up of more recent renegade marines. They kept their armor painted in their imperial colors and put big red Xs over their old chapter badges. So the Red Corsair marines I made were painted as former Ultramarines and Space Wolves. ( I didn't know what colors to use for Astral Claws)

welcome to the forums and to the game. What you should buy next is up to if your going to use the chaos codex or not. The problem with the Red Corsairs is that they are not a traitor legion like the rest. They are not an army that has been Twisted for thousands of years by the gods of chaos. They are Renegades of the Imperium and TBH should have their own section in the codex. The problem with the Chaos codex is that to be competitive you need mutations, Deamon princes and Icons of the Chaos Gods. Where the Red Corsairs are just space marine pirates!
So far I have been only playing CSM codex. I have purchased the SM codex and started reading it. I haven't tried it yet but I think it would serve my army better. Because I dont use deamons my lists are very limited and under powered. I normally lose everything but Huron in the 4th turn and only one time I was able to bring down a majority of units w/ Huron alone to the end of the game. I find It gets frustrating so I usually give up on the 4th turn. (I have never lost Huron in a battle)
I also just bought the IA book 9 Badab war part one. I haven't got it yet but it might help me with building my army (If my friends allow me to use the book)
Here is a link to My current Chaos army list it did pretty well the last Two games (lost to SM, but it was close and I wiped out a Tau list in 3 turns)
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/318295.page
I love the Red Corsairs. Its a really great story of betrayal. Huron is my Darth Vader story. Lufgt Huron was betrayed by the Imperium, his home world attacked without just cause. There was no real evidence of mutations. The astral claws and the other chapters were the defenders of the Maelstrom against all attackers (even the imperium). Then you have Chapters who have proven mutation like the SW and they are left free to do what they please.
"It fell to Inquisitor Heironymous Stauff to bring the matter to the Astral Claws’ attention. Stauff was an uncompromising Puritan, and lacked the delicate touch of the diplomat. Faced with one of the most daunting tasks an Inquisitor can receive, the investigation of an Astartes chapter, Stauff chose direct confrontation.
He gathered together an Inquisitorial fleet and made best speed for Badab, stopping only at Morgan’s Reach to take on supplies. There he received Admiral Orman, who advised caution and patience. Orman had worked alongside the Astral Claws for decades and could not imagine any wrongdoing on the part of Master Huron.
The Inquisitor batted away such talk, and commandeered a Battlefleet Maelstrom escort squadron before departing for Badab. They arrived in system in 901.M41. The investigation fleet was detected immediately. It would take three days for the fleet to make orbit about Badab, and Stauff wasted no time. He voxed a series of high-handed missives and censures on open channels to Badab. On the planet below, Master Huron flew into a rage. He opened a dialogue with the Inquisitor, accusing him of overstepping his Imperial mandate, and failing to understand the place of Masters of the Astartes within the tapestry of Imperial hierarchy.
Neither man backed down, and as Stauff entered orbit Huron convened a conclave of his inner circle to consider his next move. It is not fully understood what happened next. Huron would later say that Stauff opened fire on his chapter Thunderhawks as they pulled into formation.
In any case, the results were as deadly as they were quick. Battery after battery of Badab orbital defenses blew Stauff’s investigation fleet into so much twisted wreckage, slowly burning away in the planet’s atmosphere."
In the end Huron took on the role as tyrant! and still defends the Maelstrom. He will one day take back his home planet, Badab, and the other planets that Defend the Maelstrom.

As for the painting side it has changed alot over time and I try new thing every time. Gold is tricky. I used to get frustrated with it and I would glob on the paint. Then cover it with a brown ink/black ink mix. now I know the secrete to painting gold... Many, Many, very thin coats of gold paint. The first 3 coats of paint look really bad but by the 4-5th coats it smooths out an looks amazing!
My old recipe for gold (termies) was:
Basecoat: Bestial Brown
Then: Dwarf Bronze
1st highlight: Shining Gold
Wash: 50% Black Ink and Brown Ink
2nd highlight Shining Gold
My new gold recipe for Gold (Defiler) is
Basecoat: Bestial brown
Then 4-5 Thin layers of Shining Gold
Wash: Chestnut Ink
1st highlight: Shining Gold
2nd highlight: 75% mix of Shining Gold and 25% Mithril Silver
3rd highlight: 50% mix of Shining Gold and 50% Mithril Silver
Final highlight: 40% mix of Shining Gold and 60% Mithril Silver
My fast recipe for Gold (Il Duce) is
Many thin coats of Mithril Silver
3-4 washes of Sepia wash till you get the gold you want
I can't wait to see your army
