They aren't exactly Squats, but Mantic Games Forgefathers are what I think Squats should look like. Here are some examples:

Hasslefree sell their Grymm range but they more Scifi than Squats. Scale might be off a little but nice nonetheless.

Bob Olley sells a huge range of space dwarves - he was one of the original squat designers (not my personal favourite I will admit).

Well the Forge Fathers have heavy armour and some pretty big guns, admittedly no tanks but they do have dreadnought-alikes.

My FLGS did a blowout on all Mantic so I bought 30 ForgeFather troops and Forgefather Huscarl for like 30 dollars. My Plan is to build a "Beards and Bolters" List, "Squats" and Space Wolves.

Hello, from another squat fan. I'm also working on a squat force. I've gotten all the figs, but progress is slow as I have other projects as well.
My project log. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/491830.page
There are a few other resources for Squat miniatures.

1) Black Tree Design space Dwarves. These minis are extremely Squat'ish and very affordable. I have two of each and they look great alongside of squats.
http://www.blacktreedesign.com/northamerica/home.php?cat=2599
BTD had some major customer service problems about 4 years ago, but they've cleaned up their act and the last couple orders I've made have been very satisfactory. Sign up for thier mailing list and get an addional 15% off most of the time and even more durring their rotating sales.
Here's mine, though the figures are nicer than my paintwork suggests:

2)Bob Olley Scrunts A bit more expensive, and more in size with Mantic figures than the original squats, but these are the top of the line new-squats. These are sculpted by the man who sculpted the original squats. Many of his scrunt lines have been sold to other companies and not yet reissued, but he's got a new line out.
http://www.olleysarmies.co.uk/home.html#galleries

3)Space Dwarf Guardsmen from russia. Word is that if you email them privately they also have some with melta and plasma guns that they can't show for copy right reasons...
Not currently for sale, but if you contact this seller, she can probably get them for you. I beleive these were available for 5 for $15.
http://myworld.ebay.com/mrs-velard?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

4)Hasslefree Grymn are another option. Though their minis have a very different contemporary sci-fi look, the range is VERY wide and well developed.
http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?category=miniatures

There are a few other more obscure options that you can see at the Frothers space dwarf pages. Probably the most comprehensive list of lesser known not-squats.
http://wk.frothersunite.com/sc/spacedwarf/spacedwarf.htm

As to refference material, look for the Rogue Trader era "Compendium"

With a bit of searching, you can usually find one for under 20 bucks. It has the most complete information about squats that was ever published in book form. Pictures, army lists, history, etc.

The Codex Imperialis book and Army lists booklet from the 2nd edition box set have good information also and are somewhat easier to obtain, but not as complete as the Compendium.

A bit obvious but worth mentioning, the Dakka gallery has over 500 images tagged 'squat'.

Those are pretty cool, but I'm not a fan of the cannon arms. Still, maybe someday with a touch of converting. They do have alot of the design elements of the classic squat exo-armor.

Right now I'm looking at the Mantic Deadzone Forgefather Forge Guard...

...as they will be part of my Deadzone pledge.

Seriously great post, Eilif. Though Bob Olley was one of the sculptor of the GW Squats, he came in quite a bit later with his Iron Claw Squats and Space Dwarves than the Perry Twins, who did the originals and all Squats for quite awhile. I didn't realise that Bob Olley sold off his older sculpts. I do like the newer ones more than the previous ones though, so I might pick up a squad or two when/if I have some spare cash for them. I've bought stuff from Velard before, and not seen those dwarfs - they match the original GW-aesthetic very well indeed. I may have to pick up some of those!

Thanks, and thanks for the clarification.
One more bit about Scrunts. I just recieved my first Scrunts in the mail yesterday. They are indeed larger than squats, but not so much that they wouldn't look good in the same army, especially if kept in separate squads.

at $8 it's a bit rich for my blood, but with the helmet and quilted jacket it certainly has the right look.

Let me see what I can do about getting a comparison shot this weekend of my olderstyle scrunt and a GW squat.

In the meantime, here's a pic of the new scrunts from the space dwarf forum.
http://spacedwarfsonline.freeforums.org/scrunts-ollies-armies-t328.html

They look considerably larger even than the older scrunt figures that I have.
Tac Assault Scrunt with GW squat.

This is actually pretty disappointing. The sculpt is cool, but they really aren't 28mm dwarfs anymore. More like 28mm overweight human soldiers.

The only good news is that the link above has a pic of the velard space dwarf and looks like it scales very nicely with the GW Squa
