So as I come down to my last dozen or so Space Marines, I'm finding I have a stupid amount of bits on my hands. So I've decided to paint up five objective markers, four "supply dumps" for general objective markers (two IG, two SM) and an SM "Relic" objective marker (this one's gonna be cool, I have some awesome designs done for it.) however and I have checked my mini rulebook and googled a little and come up dry, is there a required base size for objective markers? Do they have to be standard bases? Or can they be 40mm?

After many years of not specifying, the 6th ed rulebook actually suggests a 25mm base. That said, for at least the past 5-10 years, IME 40mm bases or poker chips have been the de-facto standard at most places and big events I've played. But that's only in around a dozen states, a couple of dozen GTs (or similar) and a couple of hundred smaller one-day events; not a scientific survey or anything.

While this is dangerous to say, there is no actual rule, so use common sense. 40mm seem to be what most people use.

And in the end, it doesn't really matter, does it? I mean, everybody knows in advance the size of the objective marker, so there isn't any serious advantage to one player or another, regardless of how big the objective is.

So long as you avoid some players having a certain size objective and some players having a different size in the same game.

Alright, in that case I'll probably aim for 40mm, just so I can throw some rocks and "snow" on them easier after paint. Thanks guys!

We play 40MM. The only difference I can think of between 40MM and 25MM is general accessibility and greater leeway in holding the objective and avoiding the blast from exploding.

Oh 25mm would be slightly easier to deny by objective sitting

The only time my buddies and I have set an objective where it would actually matter is we added a model on the table as an "HVT*" that had to be captured and escorted off the map. So obviously that would be on a 25mm base...

Hmmmm

if you're making a set, just make sure that they are all on the same size base so everyone has the same chance of holding it.

I don;t know. Different size markers might be interesting. In terms of the mysterious objectives there are all sorts of different bits and peices going on, so it doesn't necessarily mean that all objective markers need to be the same size. In each individual case both sides have exactly the same chance to take/contest an individual marker. If size becomes an issue you could even just say that you measure to a particular point on the marker (the centre for instance) then the size doesn't actually matter. You just need to agree it with your opponent before the game.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

The rules say 1''-2'' diameter, so I'd use that as a general orientiation.
