I just got a copy of the June Wargames Illustrated and the final page has next months cover as per.

It shows a headline of "The Japs are coming" along with a picture of a Japanese tank and infantry being ambushed by Russian soldiers.

I'm guessing this may be known about already but it seems like there is a new supplement called Rising Sun about to hit the shelves. (It also notes the inclusion of Finnish forces too)

Interesting....I've been bitching about this for a long time.

So maybe well see the Pacific, Singapore, Aussies, Kiwi's, USMC, SEA BEES, JAPS, CHINESE, More Indian units, Ghurka's etc.

Very interesting stuff indeed......Guadalcanal and Singapore will be great books.

It´s pretty much official now. The Japanese will be featured as part of the early war eastern front book coming this fall.

My guy didn´t go as far as actually saying that they were in there and I didn´t want to push him. But he hinted VERY heavily, and said that they are definitely coming out this fall.

Wow. I know that Battlefront where going to have to turn their attention to the far east sooner or later, but I'm rather surprised to see that they have chosen Manchuria are the place to make the Japanese debut.

Actually though it could be a sensible move. After all most the Russian forces are already in production and this way they get to test the Japanese in a niche theater and that way they can ensure they are thoroughly play tested by the time they move to the Pacific Islands books in the coming years, which is probably where the lion’s share of Japanese sales will take place.

Why the surprise?

Only place the Japanese deployed more than a handful of tanks...

Just because it's not the main conflict that springs to mind involving the Japanese in WW2. Most people tend to think of the Pacific Islands or Burma so logically that is where the money is to be made. I can't see there being much demand for this.

But like I said perhaps that is to Battlfefronts advantage. They can test the army here and later on when they do branch out into the popular periods they can be confident they have the Japanese properly play tested.

Yes, please!

I'm interested in the Finnish, and they may just be my early war army. I may have to make a Japanese army just so that I have something for my eventual marines and SEABEES to fight.

The uniform worn in Manchuria would not be the tropical uniform, though they might work for a unit quickly transferred from there or Japan to the islands.

Wow, this is great news. I've only started playing FOW recently but I've still hoped for Battlefront to do Pacific theatre fights. Can't wait to see what we have in store.

I have to say I think this is very interesting as from what I am aware of this will be the Japanese in the EW period.

A great way to trial out there national rules and see how they work (but in EW Russia are axis so what will the Japanese be?)

As to expanding into the whole pacific theater I think it is an excellent idea, but I think I would keep it separate from the rest of FoW, I think you need to have very different rules for the island based nature and dense terrain compared to normal FoW

In the early war, the Russians are on the side of the Russians... Don't think of them as axis or allies at that time.

It makes sense really. Most campaigns involving the Japanese won't translate well into FoW rules and japanese equipment was decidely subpar. Focusing on the early campaign in Manchukuo smoothes over the equipment issues (toy tanks all round) and would allow Battlefront to over accentuate tanks like they love to do. The 1945 Manchuria campaign would be another matter entirely.....

I presume that this book will cover minor nations in the EW period?

like lots of Naval Gunfire Support, Air support, supply issues and such. I could see Beaches and Amphibious Ops needing a slight overhaul to better represent the pacific. It will be quet thite impressive if they get this right.

Awesome, thanks for sharing.

I noted that battlefront are also selling a 'getting started' magazine under the flames of war label which features the open fire rulebook, a discount for open fire and a full copy of normandy battles in an attempt to draw in more new players. It is available in the UK from WHSmiths for 7.99.

That blurb from the mag says nothing about Flames of War. Given that there are presently no rules for Japanese in Flames of War I find it hard to expect there to be any FoW involvement in that months WI theme. Usually any kind of FoW involvement in a theme revolves around a new FoW release like for Market Garden and Nuts. So I expect some cool articles on those themese for other games, but no FoW aspects. No different than the Gallipoli themed issue, or issues that have ancients based themes and so on.

I would certainly love to see Flames of War expand to the Pacific, but this issue certainly isn't going to be it.

Repeat after me.....

BANZAI!!!! BANZAI !!!! BANZAI!!!!

Right now i've got that out of my system, we can all start to get excited, about USMC, ANZAC Units, Indian Army, Burma, Malaya, Gurka's, Chindits, and most of all SLIM.

I cannot wait for a Slim in Burma, the BF book has got to be called "Defeat into Victory".

I mean read this opening gambit from his book.

“A general who has taken part in a campaign is by no means best fitted to write its history. That, if it is to be complete and unbiased, should be the work of someone less personally involved. Yet such a general might write something of value. He might, as honestly as he could, tell of the problems he faced, why he took the decisions he did, what helped, what hindered, the luck he had, and the mistakes he made. He might, by showing how one man attempted the art of command, be of use to those who may later themselves have to exercise it. He might even give, to those who have not experienced it, some impression of what it feels like to shoulder a commander’s responsibilities in war. These things I have tried to do in this book.”

If you don't know anything about these battles, all i can say is read this...In his own words, the most Humane, inspirational, pragmatic, straight talking but humble Senior Officer the British Army ever had, and probably our greatest general (up there with Marlborough in my view).
