I've got a non wargaming buddy that has the starter sets for 2nd Ed WHFB and 40k. What would be a fair offer for them? Would you still do 50% of retail, or does the age add/subtract anything? They're still on sprue bit open.

50% seems like a bit much considering the almost zero model diversity.
I am no collector though so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. I don't know specifically what's in there, or what they originally sold for.

The second edition sets have a certain amount of novelty value, but no real collector real value.

The only reasons to buy them are if you a. want them for your collection or b. intend to play 2nd edition.
If you're not a collector and/or don't intend to play it, it's just a waste of money. The models are fairly terrible by todays standards, and while a lot of the fluff is cool, it's not really a selling point.

I just figured it'd be a decent way to get a few cheap Space Marines really. I didn't think the poses would be exciting, but I don't want them to stand out TOO much. Asking around many say there's a huge difference which I hadn't expected. I haven't been able to look at these yet.

You'll get two complete tactical squads in it with sergeant with bolt pistol and power sword, missile launcher and flamer. And the models will be unimaginably awful. Static poses (as in, one pose for all of the bolter Marines, one for both of the sergeants, one for the flamers and one for the missile launchers. Not only that, but BORING poses.
There's better ways to get cheap Marines, like hunting down Black Reach marines on ebay (which also nets you a Dreadnought).
Really, this is what they look like.

The underlined is not 100% true.
the Missile Launcher dudes are the ones that I use, I love the old ML guys. Plus the Missile Launcher is actually on a swivel so all the ML guys do not have to look exactly the same if you do not want them to.

That's not so bad, I don't think. A bit boring, but not too bad. A couple SW accessories sprues and they'd be fine mixed in with my other GH. Knowing what all is in the box will help me figure out an offer price, so thanks for that info too!

There's also 20 Goff Orks (Ork Boyz, again, monopose with bolt pistol (they didn't have sluggas back then) arms on swivel joints), and 40 mono pose (really monopose, single peice cast) Gretchin with Autoguns. As below. Plus a carboard proxy dreadnought (don't get excited, it's just printed on a flat peice of carboard) and some carboard terrain, as well as the dice, books, markers, etc.

Psh, I still use my second edition marines in my army. The over the shoulder big missile launchers always get people talking. I have other 2nd ed stuff as I got into the game as 40k shifted from 2nd to 3rd edition.
I think 50% retail is a good starting point and if you're doing ebay just say where they go. That's what I always do when I sell things on ebay and i'm rarely disappointed.

The orks are a bit of a disappointment. I was hoping they'd work to start an army, but the look is far more divergent from the current aesthetic. My buddy is trying to get me to buy both the fantasy and 40k boxes, but I haven't found there to be any interest in it, and I don't particularly want the fantasy models based on the pictures I've seen.
Hopefully I can get him to sell me just the 40k box and I can offload the orks to someone in a trade or something. Automatically Appended Next Post: Update:
Got him to give me the 40k one by itself for $20. I'm ok with that, now if anyone wants those orks...

There are ZERO models in the second edition whfb box set, it only had the rules.
4th edition was the first fantasy box set, it had elves and goblins
5th had lizards and girly knights
Those marines in the 2nd edition really are not too spiffy. I still use mine because they have a pretty decent paint job but I would never be inclined to buy more.

Looks like it's the 4th edition box he's selling then. I forget that there are more editions of WHFB than 40k. It is the Goblins vs High Elves from around '92.
I don't see any difference between the marines, other than the boring mono pose. Good enough to hid in amongst my fancier GH, I think. This doubles my available infantry models, woo!

See if you can get the fantasy one for 15$ may be worth it at that price just to have it laying around just in case. Personally if I could get an older edition at that price I'd give it to my son and let him have at it!

He was willing to do it for $15 if I bought both of them, I just don't like the models in the WHFB box, and with an old Lizardmen army in storage, I'm not especially looking to start another fantasy army. May start fantasy up again, I dunno. If there were people interested in the box, I'd grab it and set up a sale or trade.

I could be wrong, but there are also some marked height differences for 2nd Edition. I believe it was...3rd edition that the size of models increased?

The 3rd ed multi-part marines are fractionally bigger. I wouldn't call it a 'marked difference'.
The Orks are where the biggest change occured. The plastics in the 2nd ed starter were a bit of an odd design direction. They don't really match anything else that came before or after.

True. There is one lady in the KC area that uses a green tide list full of those old Goffs. I'm guessing that she got the models for a very low price.
They do make good test models for paint schemes and/or techniques.

If you have an Ork army the dreadnought would be fun.
Official mode on the base it came on, turn it side on and it can hide behind a model lamp post!

It's not a model. It's a cardboard cutout intended as a stand in for the dreadnought in a couple of the starter missions that come in the set.

It was just to make the final starter mission (which uses all of the models) a little less wildly unbalanced. The Ork side had no heavy weapons, just bare bones Orks and Grots, so in the final starter scenario (which uses all of the models in the set) the marines would just walk right over the Orks without the dread as a little bit of heavy backup... But the budget for the set obviously didn't include producing a plastic dreadnought at that point in time.
When this set was released, after all, GW had a grand total of 3 plastic vehicle kits - the rhino, the landraider, and the short-lived Ork battlewagon. The cost of producing them was still ridiculous, and making plastic vehicles for a starter set would have seemed like a bit of a pipe dream back then...
