The new animated Star Wars TV show is to be called Rebels and that’s official. It’s going to be set between episodes 3 and 4 of the main saga and tell us how the rebel alliance was founded.

Lucasfilm released this preview clip today to get us all up to speed on their hitherto secret planning.

You may recall that Dave Filoni posted some TIE Fighter artwork last week, much the same as appears on his drawing board in this video.

The first episode, which is being written by Simon Kinberg, will premiere on Disney XD late next year. We’ll have to wait and see when the series proper will start. More information is likely to arrive at this year’s Celebrations event, but for now, here’s the full press release.

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD’s viewers.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. “I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV — an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date

This intrigues me, as everything that got passed by the "keepers of Canon" at lucasarts should be considered canon, so despite it not being too popular, unless they plan on invalidating The Force Unleashed, we already know how the rebel alliance was founded.

The books and games have always been considered 'secondary cannon'... As evidenced quite frequently in the prequels and the Clone Wars cartoon, they're liable to be ignored at any time.

I know I won't shed a tear. TFU was really only cool from a mechanic standpoint(force power mechanics) but they kinda derped on everything else.

Yeah. Karen Travis quite writing for the Star Wars EU because the Clone Wars tv series retconned a lot of the back story for the Mandelorians (and I was totally cool with it

). Lucas liked to take what he wanted from the EU (Kashyyk, double bladed lightsabers, rule of two) and ignore the rest. It made his fans hate him.

Disney though can probably do something fresh. I wouldn't mind a total reboot of the EU canon. It worked for Ultimate Marvel.

Huh, another one of these? I'm just going to consider it a continuation of Clone Wars. A spinoff at least.
Also, don't we kinda already know how the rebel alliance was started?

Considering how much I've enjoyed Clone Wars, I'm fairly interested.

Still bitter about the Clone Wars cancellation, but I'm willing to give this a go.

I'm interested. It'd be cool to see a mix of older ships and equipment alongside the "newer" stuff of the original trilogy era. Z-95s vs. TIE Fighters, that kind of thing.

We also know how the Clone Wars pan out... The cartoon series was still cool, though.

Knowing the destination doesn't have to make the journey less fun.
