Looking through the 40K rulebook I noticed that GW's supposed to be selling battlemats to use as gaming surface... but I seriously can't seem to find any. Could someone point me in the right direction? Or maybe offer alternatives?

Cheers mates!

is under gaming/scenery/citadel scenery. I never really use one other than when at my FLGS, but I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives.

Check out zuzzy battle mats. Quite expensive compared to the battle mat but very nice.

that's weird... I'm following the link, but just ends up at the frontpage... and neither browsing nor searching yields any results :S

The Zuzzies are sweet, I agree, but I was hoping for something a bit cheaper (first time I'm turning to GW when I want something cheap )

Check out model train sites. They tend to have 'grass mats'.

The GW battle mat is sadly no longer available. Check to see if there is a place that recovers pool tables in your area. Quite often, they keep some of the old felts, and they work great as a table cover.

1.) The battlemat is no longer available ... in most regions (Australia seems to have a few left).
2.) Model railroad mats are no alternative. The grass will come off when you move the first or second unit over it.
3.) There are alternatives, but all are not exactly the same. I recommend felt mats by Hotz mats, esp. European Field for Fantasy and Dirt Planet for 40k.

Weird of GW to put it in their rulebook and then removing the product from the site :/

oh well.
Those Hotz mats look pretty neat, I'll take a look later on.
Thanks for the suggestions mates!

I would second the Zuzzy mats, as the detail is great and the price isn't terrible. Plus they come in a range of sizes and landscapes so you can sort of customize them to your table.

The only caveat I would include is their shipping times are horrible. I know it's just like one dude in his garage making them or something like that but it literally takes 2-3 months to ship, with usually no contact from Zuzzy besides "hey we shipped your mat" in month 3.

Have any of you tried the Woodland Scenics Readygrass mats? http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/ReadyGrassVinylMat

They're available at my local Hobby Lobby, so I can get one at 40% off any time.

As said: Model railroad mats are made to cover a surface, maybe glue a miniature on it and be done. They are not abrasion-resistant, so after a few games, you are left with a paper surface.

Concerning Zuzzy: Great looking mats (if you get rid of the rubber smell and manage to paint them), but shipping costs to Europe are insane because of the weight (guess more so after international shipping rates exploded).

Find a fabric store, and get a big piece of cloth, or felt.

If you want some color variation on it, get a printed pattern, or just a basic "green" or what ever, then hit it with some quick spray paint to add bursts.

If you cant get to a fabric store, go to any store that sells bedding, and get green sheets.

best of luck!
